dwell in the secret place. Here the word implies settledness as opposed to vag rancy ; it suggests the contrast between a stable home and a shifting tent. Never were men more tempted to live their lives in the outer court o f things, and neglect or forget -the central shrine, the habita tion of sovereignty, and holiness, and peace. That is really not to live at all. It is no more life than it would be home to sit down in the porch of our houses, and never enter the sweet inner living- room of happy fellowship and joy.— Dr. J. H. Jowett. When my soul is faint and thirsty, ’neath the shadow of His wing, There is cool and pleasant shelter, and a fresh and crystal spring; And my Saviour rests beside me, as we hold communion sweet; If I tri-ed, I could not utter what He says when thus we meet. —o— July 20—" Reckon it nothing hut joy . . . whenever you find yourself, hedged in by various trials; be assured that the testing of your faith leads to power of endurance" (Jas. 1 :2, 3, Free Transla tion). God hedges in His own that He may preserve them, but oftentimes they see only the wrong side of the, hedge, and so misunderstand His dealings. It was so with Job (cf. Job 3:23). Ah, but Satan knew the value o f that hedge (cf. 1 :10) ! Through the leaves of every trial there are chinks for the light to shine through. Thorns do not prick unless you lean against them, and not one touches us without His knowledge. The words that hurt you, the letter which gave you pain, the indifference of a friend, shortness of money—are all known to Him who sym pathizes as none else can, and watches to see if, through all, you will “dare to trust Him quite.” When obstacles and trials seem Opposition is essential to a true equi librium of forces. The centripetal and centrifugal forces acting in opposition to each other keep our planet in her orbit. The one propelling, thn other repelling, so act and react that instead o f sweeping off into space in a pathway o f desolation and destruction, she pursues her even orbit around her solar center. So God guides our lives. It is not enough to have an im pelling force. We need just as much a repelling force, so God holds us back by the testings and ordeals of life, by the pressure of temptation and trial, by the things that seem to be against us, but which really are furthering our way and establishing our goings. Let us thank Him for both; let us take the weights as well as the wings and thus, divinely impelled, let us press on with faith and patience in our high and heavenly calling.— Days of. Heaven upon Earth. A streamlet started singing seaward-ho! But found across the path its fancy planned Like prison walls to be, I do the little I can do, And leave the rest to Thee. —Streams in the Desert July 21— “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand o f God, that he may exalt” (1 Pet. 5:6).
A stone, which stopped it with the stern command, “Thus far, and never farther, shalt thou go.” And where the tiny stream was wont to flow A shining lake appeared, with silver strand, Refreshing flower-strewn fields on either hand— Reflecting starry skies and sunset glow. So oftentimes we find our progress stayed By stones that bar the steeps we fain had trod; Whereat we murmur with a sense of wrong, Unmindful that by means like this is made That sea of glass where stand the saints of God To sing the new and everlasting song. —o— July 22— “Surely Jehovah is in this place; and I knew it not . . . This is none other than the house o f God, and this is the gate of hearven” (Gen. 28:16, 17). .There ought never to be a moment of my waking hours when I should have to make Jacob’s confession as to God’s pres ence, “1 knew it not.” We have God’s presence in a richer way than Jacob ever knew it, for Christ is with us always, even unto the end of the age; and not only with us, but within us. When a man passes from a half-way knowledge o f God that takes the many passages in the New Tes tament concerning “ Christ in you” as figurative, and awakens' to the glorious fact that this truth is not a figure of speech, but a literal, actual reality, he be gins—if he will meet the other condi tions^—to live “ the life that is Christ"; and never after that is he likely to say of God’s literal presence, “I knew it not." Life then is habitually transformed for him. Always “Jehovah is in this place"; everywhere “there is none other than the house of. God." , — Selected. July 23— “ While I was musing the fire burned" (Psa. 39:3). My soul, if thou wouldst muse more, the fire would burn more. Why dost thou not retire oftener with thyself? Thou wouldst be better fitted for the world if thou wert less worldly. If thou hadst more heavenly fire, thou wouldst have more earthly power. Is it not written of the Son of man that “as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was al tered” ? Yes; it was from His prayer that His transfigured glory came. It was from the glow o f His heart that there issued the glory o f His countenance. O my soul, wouldst thou have thy life glorified, beau tified, transfigured to the eyes o f men? Get thee up into the secret place o f God’s pavilion where the fires o f love are burn ing. Thy life shall shine gloriously to the dwellers on the plain. Thy prayers shall be luminous ' they shall light thy face like the face of Moses when he wist not that it shone. Thy words shall be burning; they shall kindle many a heart. —George Matheson. —o— July 24— "A s an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth
