otherwise; and if the loving hand of our Lord puts us forth, it must be well. On, in His name, to green pastures and still waters and mountain heights! Whatever awaits us is encountered first by Him. Faith’s eye can always discern His ma jestic preserice in front; and when that cannot be seen, it is dangerous to move forward. Bind this comfort to your heart, that the Saviour has tried for Himself all the experiences through which He asks you to pass; and He would not ask you to pass through them unless He was sure that they were not too difficult for your feet, or too trying for your strength. This is the blessed life—not being anxious to see far in front, nor careful about the next step, not eager to choose the path, not weighted with the heavy responsibili ties o f the future; but quietly following behind the Shepherd, one- step at a time. -—The Present Tenses o f the Blessed Life. —o— July 28—" And there came a lion” (1 Sam. 17:34). It is a source of inspiration and strength to come in touch with the youth ful David, trusting God. Through faith in God he conquered a lion and a bear, and afterwards overthrew the mighty Go liath. When that lion came to despoil the flock, it came as a wondrous opportunity to David. If he had failed or faltered he would have missed God’s opportunity for him and probably would never have come to be God’s chosen king of Israel. “And there came a lion.” One would not think that a lion was a special blessing from God. The lion was God’s oppor tunity in disguise. Every difficulty that presents itself to us, if wie receive it in the right way, is God’s opportunity. Every temptation that comes is God’s opportun ity. When the “lion” comes, recognize it as God’s opportunity no matter how rough the exterior. The very tabernacle o f God was covered with badgers’ skins and goats’ hair: one would not think there would be any glory there. The She- kinah of God was manifest under that kind o f covering. May God open our eyes to see Him,—whether in temptations, trials, dangers, or misfortunes. —Streams in the Desert. —o— July 29— “And he bearing his cross went forth" (John 19:17). Every true cross-bearer learns to carry his cross as if it were an ornament rather than a burden, and finds after a time that it carries him. It gives more strength to him than he gives to it. Yet how many persons there are who scarcely attempt to carry the cross! It is thrown on them, and they sink down under it. What is there in this world that is worthy of such a sacrifice of manhood, especially in those who are called by such a Saviour, who have such a luminous Example, and who have round about them so many stimulating influences? Shall grief be for ever a tyrant? Shall sorrow stand for ever domineering over men? I marvel that there is not more glorying over the cross. I marvel that there are not more songs of victory sung.— Selected. For I have seen the open hand o f God, And in it nothing, nothing but the rod Of mine affliction.
them on her wings; so the Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him’’ (Deut. 32:11, 12). Our Almighty Parent delights to con duct the tender nestlings of His care to the very edge o f the precipice, and even to thrust them off into the steeps of air, that they may learn thieir possession of unrealized powers of flight, to be forever a luxury; and if, in the attempt, they be exposed to unwonted peril, He is prepared to swoop beneath them, and to bear them upward on His mighty pinions. When God brings any of His children into a po sition o f unparalleled difficulty, they may always count upon Him to deliver them. — I HAVE a b o u t 1,000 copies le ft o f m y husband’s l i t t l e book let “ THE BIBLE A N D SCIENCE,” w h i c h I w ould like to g et into the hands o f you ng people in H igh School and Colleges.
