creature, not to convert those to whom we preach, and we must learn to obey the command whatever the results may be. P oints a n d Problem s 1. “Scattered abroad upon the persecu tion" (Acts 11:19). Stephen did not die in vain. The persecution which began with his martyrdom scattered the early believers who had settled down in Jerusalem, and thus providentially started the work of world missions. To a sovereign God there are no accidents. He makes the wrath of man to praise Him. 2. “Traveled as far as . . . Antioch” (v. 19). Thus the gospel came to Antioch, Syria’s great metropolis which was called “the Queen of the East,” third city of the Roman Empire, after Rome and Alex andria. Teachers should not confuse this Antioch with the other Antioch in Pisidia. Both appear in Acts 13. Cicero praises its art and literature, but it was more famous for its vice. Thomson says its citizens were “notorious for their commercial apti tude, the licentiousness of their pleasures, and the scurrility of their wit.” Yet this is the place chosen of God as headquarters for His mission to the Gentile world (cf. Acts 13:1-4). 3. “Preaching the word to . . . Jews only” (v. 19). In spite of the providential scattering of the church, some had not yet learned the lesson that Peter was taught by the case of Cornelius. It is possible also that the “Grecians” of verse 20 are not Gentiles but Grecian Jews. On this point, however, we cannot be certain. 4. “Separate me Barnabas and Saul” (Acts 13:2).‘ The Apostle Paul records three distinct divinely ordained separations in his life. First, he says God “separated

me from my mother’s womb” to reveal His Son (Gal. 1:15). Second, he was “separated unto the gospel” (Rom. 1:1) while on his journey to Damascus (Acts 9:1-15). Third, he was separated from his place in Antioch for his great missionary work. 5. “They sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost . . ." (vs. 3, 4). Here is a beautiful picture of the ideal relation between the Holy Spirit and the church which He indwells. In this case, to be sent forth by the church was also to be sent forth by the Holy Spirit. Only thus can the work of the church, whether missionary or otherwise, accomplish the will of God. G olden T ex t Illustration A missionary on his return from Africa was asked how many of the natives in his district had been brought to the knowledge of Christ as Saviour. He replied, “Fifty.” “And how many of these are preachers ?” “Fifty,” was again his answer. So it was in the days of old (Acts 8 :4) ; so it should be today (Mk. 16:15). — S elected .
