of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works . . .” (Eph. 2:8, 9). How then can I “work out” that which I already possess? An illustration from the system of slav ery may help. A slave is given his full lib erty at a definite point in time, and then he is told by his former master to “work out” his liberty in the sense of using it well, of enjoying its prerogatives and manifesting his blessings to others. Likewise we who were the servants of sin have been eman cipated by God and have been given full pardon and freedom. And now it is as if He were saying, “‘Work ouf your salva tion which I have put in you so that you may not only enjoy your liberty but may also manifest to others your freedom in the -Lord.” r The instruction is also very personal; it concerns “your own salvation.” Just as the act of belief and acceptance of Christ as Saviour may not be performed by one person for another, that salvation cannot be “worked” out by one Christian for an other. Paul could give instructions, but, each believer must work out his individual living and witnessing in the power of the Holy Spirit. This life is to be lived “with fear and trembling”-—not mistrust, doubt, or slavish fear, but with a reverence, a holy fear, and a distrust of our own selves, coupled with a great desire to please our Lord—to lose our wills in His. “God . . . worketh in you.” This is the reason we can “work.” This is no hopeless task to which we have been called. “God . . . worketh in you,” Paul says, “both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” We work out what God has already worked in, and it is His,grace that causes us to will and do His will. He continues His abiding presence in us in order that we may be conformed to His image. “He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil. 1:6). Nothing tests a man so surely as his definition of success. He loves best that in which he is most anxious to succeed; and it is a pathetic testimony to the externalism of our standards that the men most" com monly called “successful” are those whose wealth or worldly position has dazzled the eyes of the multitude. But is it not very plain, upon reflection, that the only suc cessful man is the man who has most tri umphantly done the real business of his life? And here we are face to face with the question which is ultimate for all of us* What is the real business of life? — A q u il l a W ebb . II. T h e S cho olm aster ’ s A dvice In a Scotch novel by Stewart, the old schoolmaster, “the dominie” as they called him, eagerly scanning his students for -the one who will develop the mental capacity to take the honors at the great university at Edinburgh, finally discovers one in the person of a lad from a poor shepherd’s home. Fearing lest the boy should be sev ered from the opportunity to make his mark in this'way, the old dominie said to him: “Draw a line behind you, laddie, and remember that in the grammar of life, the only verbs worth conjugating are the verbs ‘to be’ and ‘to do,’ not ‘to get’ and ‘to en joy.’”— Five Thousand Best Illustrations, by H allock . ' “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord; but they that deal truly are his de light” (Prov. 12:22). There is an old story from the Jewish Talmud that when Falsehood slunk up to Noah in the form of a lizard, and asked to be admitted into the ark, he was told that only mated pairs could enter. So he sought Sin, who consented to become like a lizard and enter with him, provided they should never separate. And truly they never have. — S elected . II. T h e “ W h it e ” L ie And I will set my sin in the light of Eastertide. When I hold up my sin with the resurrection morn as a background, I See my sin as it is. There are so many false, perverting lights about me, and I do not see things as they are. There are worldly limelights which give shady things an attractive hue. For instance, I sometimes hear about a “white lie.” A “white lie” is a falsehood with worldly limelight playing upon it. When I take a “white lie” and set it in the glory of Easter, the sin appears exceedingly sinful, and the whiteness changes Into a darkness as of night— J . H. J ow ett . III. A dvance A s s ig n m e n t An evangelist who was conducting nightly services announced that on the fol lowing evening he would speak on the sub ject of “Liars.” He advised his hearers to read in advance the seventeenth chapter of Mark. The next night he arose and said: “I am going to preach on ‘Liars’ tonight, and I would like to know how many read the chapter I suggested.” A hundred hands were upraised. “Now,” he said, “you are the very persons I want to talk to—there isn’t any seventeenth chapter of Mark.”— The Christian Advocate. F a m il y T rad ition David Livingstone said of his ancestors: “My great-grandfather fell at the battle of Culloden, fighting for the old line of kings, but the only family tradition of which I feel proud is this: One of my forefathers on his deathbed said to his children round him, ‘I have searched diligently all the tra ditions of our family, and I never found that there was a dishonest man among our forefathers. If, therefore, any of you take to dishonest ways, it will not be because it runs in our blood. I leave this precept with you, Be honest.’ ”—G. B. F. H allock . AUGUST 16, 1936 THE CHRISTIAN IDEA OF SUCCESS P h il ip p ia n s 2:12-15 M editation on th e L esson The Philippian church was very dear to Paul’s heart, and he longed that the believ ers there might be “filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ” (Phil. 1:11). He gives them a seemingly paradoxical command : “Work out your own salvation . . . For it is God which worketh . ...” (vs. 12, 13). “Work out your own salvation” ! Why, Paul, didn’t you say that salvation was a free gift? “By grace are ye saved through faith ; and that not
