AUGUST 9 T h e C leansing F lam e "Sanctify now yourselves?’ (2 Chron. 29:5). Aught that is not for Jesus, aught that is not for God, aught that memory brings up and the conscience begins to tremble and to be troubled about, must be brought forth and burnt before the Lord, cast into the flame till God shall consume it. . . . Are you ready for this flame? These evil thoughts and desires and imaginations and actions, and every mean thing, every low thing, every foul thing, every unhallowed thing, everything which you would not have told to the ears of your neighbor for the world; . . . things which only you and God lgjow—during them out, carry them forth, and burn them . . . and you shall be cleansed.—J. B. F ig g is . The notice which Christ gave to small performances is very gratifying to His lowly ones, whose zeal has no opportunity ;#f displaying itself in conspicuous forms of obedience. The common worker is not beneath the Master’s regard; his humble action will not fail of recognition and re ward. The giving of a cup of cold water was a trifle, but, it stands in thé list of things commended ; just as the widow’s two mites were a trifle compared with other monies ’pouring into the treasury; ÿet Christ saw no contribution that came up to the value of her farthing. And, if your little “ all” appear upon the altar, it ijs enough, for Him with whom we have to do : Christ is pleased. Wonderful the ease_ with which a true faith is able to gratify our Lord !—W. G r if f it h s . The glories of the glorious Lord are most frequently manifested in connection with sin or sorrow, distress or fear. . . . And in our own experience we may safely say that we should never have known all that God could be or do for the soul if we had not been brought into the very dust of death. The dark clouds have all been needed, to break into prismatic beauty the rays of divine helpfulness. When heart and flesh fail, and destruction is imminent, and the enemy is already counting the towers and making preparations for the last assault, then the vision is given of the environing presence of the glorious Lord, who is never known in the abundance of His grace and adaptation to our need till we are in ex tremity.— Alliance Weekly. AUGUST, 10 Giving All "And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name o f a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reword” . (Matt. 10:42). AUGUST 11 T he V ision of th e G lorious L ord “The glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams” (Isa. 33 :21).

am not ashamed.” He could go further and issue the command, “Endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ, because he could declare, “I endure all things.” As a teacher, Paul’s greatness lay largely in the exemplification in his own life of the principles he offered for others to follow. He lived what he taught. Do we? If we 'do_ not,, we need not expect young “Timothyv to listen. — S elected . AUGUST 7 P rovision M ade ' “In the Lord have I righteousness and strength"'Mlsa.. 45 :24). Some years ago, I was reading of a ship that came front New Zealand. It was wrecked in the Indian Ocean. There were just a few sailors,, and they were thrown on an uninhabited island. For eighty days they were there without food, and '.they: lived on the roots of plants. On the eigh tieth day, a .ship hove in sight, saw the signal, and came to take them off. Do you know. wff!|t they found afterwards? Just a few miles from the place where they were wrecked was a government depot, with plenty of food, and plenty of clothing —-but they did not know it was there! . . . If we are' cast down, if we are discouraged, if we are filled with fear, if we give way to doubts, we have not seen the provision, we do not know what the Lord Jesus Christ has proyided for us S - E van H . H o p k in s . "Then one of the twelve, . . . went unto the chief priests, And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver" (Matt. 26:14,15). It is cause for alarm and for constant watchfulness to remember that Christ was sold by a disciple. If there is anything in your life that you prefer to Jesus Christ, that is the price at which you sell Him. It may be a friendship, a position, a pleas ure, a career. It may be money,, it ffiay be fame—but can you sell Jesus Christ so cheaply ? . . . Without Him, nothing can make us rich; with Him, no loss can make us poor. It may not be for silver, AUGUST 8 A Sham eful Sale

And it may not be for gold, Yet still by tens of thousands Is the precious Saviour sold. Sold for a godless friendship, Sold for an empty narhe, Sold for a fleeting trifle, Sold for a selfish aim.

“A t the commandment of the Lord the children of Israel journeyed, and at the commandment of the Lord they pitched: as long as the cloud abode upon the taber nacle they rested in their tents” (Num. 9:18).
