AUGUST 30 H ow to b e H oly “Perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Cor. 7:1). Some people are apt at going through the world, adding many a “Thou shalt not” to God’s law, and the result is a stunted, cramped, and dwarfed life. The better way is to insist on the presentation of the entire nature to God, that He may have full con trol of every department; and when this is accomplished, and you are living for God, you will find yourself increasingly drawn away from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, but given back to all that is pure and beautiful and natural. God gave you a whole nature; and when you are one with Him, utterly, absolutely, and com pletely, then all of it is brought under culti vation for His sake. This is holiness. M M—Alliance Weekly. AUGUST 31 God G iveth R ain “The living God . . . left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness” (Acts 14:15-17). Some rain, as well as some days, must be dark and dreary. But after all, it rather receives its tinge of pleasure or gloom from the color of our own mind at the time. Let there be within us the clear shining of a contented mind, and the darkest cloud will never want a rainbow. — J . R. V e r n o n . Is it raining, little flower ? Be glad of rain! Too much sun would wither thee; ?Twill shine again. The sky is very black, ’tis true; But, just behind it, shines the blue. Art thou weary, tender heart? Be glad of pain! In sorrow sweetest things will grow, As flowers in rain. God watches; and thou wilt have sun, When clouds their perfect work have done. — S elected . The Berean Band The Berean Band of Bible Learners,; an international and interdenominational movement founded in 1905 by its President and Secretary, Charles J. G. Hensman, is an organization of real importance in the Christian world. Its object is to supple ment and not supplant Bible reading. Active membership requires the committing to memory of at least one verse of the Bible, with the reference, each week. An official list of verses is supplied annually by the organization to all subscribing mem bers. With the view to extending and consol idating the work, it has been found desir able that branches of not less than six members should be formed wherever pos sible : in churches, schools, households, orphanages, and Christian societies gen erally. Application for the organization of such branches should be made to the General Secretary of the Berean Band, Dawson Lodge 30, Woodville Gardens, Ealing, London, W. 5, England. The President of the Society is the Rev. H. B. Barkworth, and its Vice-Presidents include such well- known American clergymen as W. E. Biederwolf, William Evans, and H. A. Ironside.

"This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners; of whom 1 am chief’ (1 Tim. 1:15). The crowning glory of man is that Christ came to redeem him. The crowning glory of our planet is that Christ, the Son of God, came into it. He trod with His feet its waters and its soil. He mingled His prayers with its midnight winds. He wet the earth with His tears and stained it with His blood. Here God erected the cross of His justice and His love. It is this which renders the earth forever mem orable and is the proof that man is a little lower than the angels. — C la ren ce E dward M a ca rtn ey . Lord, with glowing heart I’d praise Thee For the bliss Thy love bestows, For the pardoning grace that saves me, And the peace that from it flows. |1 § § 1 F r a n c is S cott K ey . It stands to reason that, even among our selves, a gift may be given, and yet we may remain none the richer for it, unless the gift is accepted; and it not unfrequently happens that a gift is given and yet is never accepted. Of course, when this is the case, he to whom it is given is no more actually benefited than if the gift had never been bestowed at all. There are neces sarily two parties to such a transaction. . . . All are not saved. But why not? Not because the grace of God does not bring salvation to every man, but because all men do not receive the gift which the grace of God has brought to them! . . . Only they who receive God’s gift are the better for God’s gift, although the gift has unques tionably been given. —W. H ay M. H. A itken . AUGUST 29 F o rg ettin g th e L o rd ’s D eclaration “The servant is not greater than his lord” (John 13:16). Wherever we turn our eyes in the church, we are met by the surprising spectacle of servants who put on the greatness which their Lord laid down. They disdain to be what their Lord was, to do what He did. There are a hundred little ways by which the spirit which is here condemned may reveal itself. He that is impatient, he that is choleric, he that is censorious, he that is sensitive and suspicious, he that prays little, he that is dogmatic, he that is unwilling in all societies to be known as a Christian— these and many others make themselves greater than the Master . . . Do we under stand, my friends, that Christ came into this world not merely to act, but also to show us how to act?— G eorge B o w e n . “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (Jas. 4:10). AUGUST 28 H ave You R eceived? "The grace of God that bringeth salva tion hath appeared to all men” (Tit. 2 : 11 ).
