recognized it as Tawny, and he could see clearly that the little lion •was in trouble, and that there was no hope of escape for him except from above. With a great swoop, he flew straight d o w n w a r d , and before Tawny could even cry out for help, he had caught him in his great talons, and lifted him up, up, up, up into the wide blue sky. For a mo ment the sudden flight took away Tawny’s breath. Then he cried out, “ Oh, Baldy, please take me home!” “Well, of course,” replied Baldy, “Where did you think we were go ing? “ Don’t drop me, Baldy! I never flew in the air before,” he pleaded. “You couldn’t get out of these claws if you wanted to,” said Baldy with a smile. “ This is one little lion the zoo isn’t going to get. I saw Jumbo down at the river giving himself a shower with his trunk. Why didn’t he knock down those boards for you?” Tawny looked ashamed. Then be cause Baldy was known to be the wisest of the birds of the forest he told him the whole story. Baldy shook his white head and said, “ It’s a lesson we all have to learn, Tawny. Unless we really stick to the truth all the time, no one has confidence in us. We get ourselves into trouble and bring a lot of unhappiness to others. I am sure you will be careful and not lie after this, but it will be quite a while before you are believed again.” Very gently he set little Tawny down beside the opening to the lions’ lair, and with the little cub’s warm thanks ringing in his ears, he took off with a great rush of his powerful wings. Tawny Tells the Truth Tawny’s mother and father and sis ters and brothers gathered about him, thankful to see him home safe and sound. Tawny was very excited. Im mediately he began to relate his ad ventures: “ I fell into the biggest trap in the . . .” then he stopped . . . “ It was a little trap for lion cubs” he went on . . . “ and Baldy, the big gest and strongest” and again he paused. But his mother smiled, “ It is almost true; next to the ostrich, he is the biggest and strongest bird in the world,” she said. * * * * * Boys and girls, the Lord has given us a wonderful thing called imagina tion which helps us to enjoy life and the world around us and to give color to what we say, but He wants

us to use it in the right way. We can tell things in an interesting man ner and not lie. So let us be careful about “make-up stories.” As long as we say they are “made-up,” they will do no harm, but when we claim that our “made-up stories” are the truth, then we are really lying, and that does not please God.

Read that wonderful verse in Psalm 51:6 which says of the Lord, “ Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts” (that means our hearts). Let us ask Him to make us truthful inside. Then we will be sure that no lies will come out of our mouths, and then people can rely upon what we say.

i h H They’l be livingyour lessons inten years. . . By next Sunday your pupils may not remember everything you said last Sunday. By next year, they may have forgotten the lesson entirely. But ten years from today, they’ll he men and women — living their lives by the standards you are teaching them today. The lessons you teach each Sunday are building up, little by little, the basic attitudes of reverence and love and faith that will make them worthwhile, fruitful Christian men and women.
