dress known as “the golden crown,” which was bound on the outside of the mitre with a ribbon of blue, and bore the inscrip tion : “Holiness to the Lord.” It was above and outside o f all the rest of his robes and adornments; and a Christian disciple may be saintly, one of God’s priests and kings, and yet lack this golden crown which rep resents the supreme hallowing even of the external conduct. DECEMBER 5 A L e s s o n i n P h o t o g r a p h y “ We all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory o f the Lord, are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit o f the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:18). This is a lesson in spiritual photogra phy, for in taking a photograph, we must have four necessary helps: first, an image; second, a camera; third, a sensitive plate; and fourth, light. When these four are combined in proper relations, we get the photographic representation. And in this one verse are suggested the four requi sites for spiritual photography: the image, the glory o f the Lord; the camera, the Holy Scripture; the sensitive plate, the hu man spirit; and the light, the Holy Ghost. To sit down as it were before that Image and meditate upon the beauty and the glory o f Christ, to present ourselves a sensitive plate to the impression, and all in the trans forming power o f the light o f the Spirit— this is to be changed into the same image, from one degree o f glory to another, even as by the Lord, the Spirit. DECEMBER 6 T h e W ord o f G od “ The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, puri fied seven times” (Psa. 12:6). There is one Book in which all the at tractions o f the highest literature may be found: the most instructive history and biography, the sublimest poetry, the high est dramatic effects, the most sublime ora tory, a divine order of fiction, and the purest philosophy. In this garden, one may breathe the fragrance of heaven with no poison in its perfumes. As a literary Book, it has no superior, not even a rival. To master the Bible is to reach a height of cul ture which no university can impart. Men have grown great by reading and studying the Word o f God, and it is not too much to say that the best reading outside o f the Bible is the books which draw their in spiration from it. Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord, To me, to me, As Thou didst bless the bread By Galilee; Then shall all bondage cease, All fetters fall; And I shall find my peace, My all in all. — M a r y A n n L a t h b u r y . A thoroughly teachable spirit is closely akin to moral honesty. It is pos sible by prejudice to fortify the whole na ture against truth; so to hinder it that it has no real opportunity o f influencing char acter. Our Lord said to the men of His
