» Ahmad Naqiuddin Mohamad, 25 is a proud Chairman of UiTM Selangor Student Co-operative, which has recorded USD902 thousands in revenue as a result from running businesses such as laundry, printing, retail shop and cafeteria.
Apart from public and private sectors, Co-operative Sector also plays a significant role in providing employment opportunities to the young people. The number of co- operatives run by youth in Malaysia has seen a slight increase over the past five years. In 2017, there were 217 youth co-ops compared to 184 in 2012 according to the Malaysia Co- operative Societies Commission. It could be argued that the increase in the number of youth co-operatives in recent years is due to the global employment crisis that led to young people gradually reduce their dependency on the labour market. Nevertheless, the involvement of youth in the country’s Cooperative Sector is still low despite the attractive co-operative principles and values are the main reasons for them to start a co-op or becoming a member.

Enable to obtain greater bargaining power, increase market entrance, combine resources and share risks are some of the main reasons young people are drawn to co-operative. As young people are facing issues such as insufficient resources and lack of knowledge, co-op is viewed as an ideal option because members can achieve more by pooling their financial and human capital. Compared to apex and secondary co-operatives, people are not quite familiar with co-operatives run by young people in Malaysia and this may due to insufficient inclusive figures that prevent concrete arguments about the benefit
