INTERVIEW: Sebastien Chaillou, the Global Youth President of International Co-operative Alliance- Asia-Pacific. “Those who want to oppress youth
are always wrong” – ICA Global Youth President
» Chaillou speaks during one of the plenary sessions conducted by the World Co-operative Monitor at the ICA Global Conference and General Assembly 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that forget about realizing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development if the young people are not playing their role to the greater extent. Let’s face it, youth are the best group of people to tackle the issues or challenges that come together when implementing the SDGs. Leaders around the world are being urged to listen to them as they are being dubbed as the “critical agents of change.” Sebastien Chaillou, who was elected as the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) Global Youth President during the ICA Global Conference and General Assembly 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is determined to make sure young people in the co-operative sector have the right tools to be able to talk and communicate about the global issues that affect their future. With more than a billion members around the world, the co-operative movement itself is a powerful economy. However, co- operatives’ continued contributions remain largely unrecognized and the co-operative sector itself is deemed as an old idea when it is actually as relevant than ever in our quest towards achieving the 2030 Agenda. It is the young co-operators job to change that ancient perception. Chaillou responded to questions about his views and insights about the SGDs from ANGKASA in writing.
