AwARDs & ACHIEvEMEnTs The Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC) held its annual meeting in October in Montgomery, Alabama, and several museum staff attended and presented. Michele Turner , director of annual giving and donor relations, presented as part of the session “How Celebrating Milestones Can Brighten Your Future.” Turner gave her insights on the Georgia Museum’s 75th anniversary celebration and how development, programming and communications can work together to benefit their individual departments and their museums as a whole when planning and implementing milestone celebrations. Tricia Miller , deputy director of collections and exhibitions and head registrar, presented as part of the session “To Be in the Collection or Not to Be in the Collection: Supplemental, Touchable and Educational Objects in Museums.” And Hillary Brown , director of communications, presented as part of the session “Museum Social Media Lessons: Best Practices for Inclusive Storytelling.” Brown was also a guest presenter for “Publishing Profits Museums,” a virtual program hosted by SEMC in September. The panel covered the rewards and challenges of producing books, catalogues and magazines. A recording can be found at semcdirect.net/SEMCVirtualPrograms. The museum was recognized with several awards during the SEMC conference. In the exhibition competition, “Waffle House Vistas” received an honorable mention award in the under $10,000 budget category. “Southern/Modern: Rediscovering Southern Art from the First Half of the Twentieth Century,” an exhibition organized by the Mint Museum in collaboration with the Georgia Museum of Art, won an honorable mention in the over $100,000 budget category. In the publication design competition, the museum won first place for Facet (in “newsletters”), second place for the two-sided card for “Feel the Beat” (in “rack cards”) and third place for the rebranding campaign (in “campaigns”). In SEMC’s technology competition, we won a bronze award in the virtual media category for our Instagram slideshows (@georgiamuseum). Kathy Hufford , former business operations specialist, was promoted to business manager in August.

The Association of Art Museum Curators recently selected Shawnya Harris , Larry D. and Brenda A. Thompson Curator of African American and African Diasporic Art, as a mentor in its Propel or Professional Alliance for Curators of Color program. In October, the Georgia Art Education Association named Callan Steinmann , director of learning and engagement, as the Outstanding Museum Art Educator for 2026. Nelda Damiano , Pierre Daura Curator of European Art, spoke at Vanderbilt University Museum of Art’s virtual symposium “Paper Backstories: European Prints in Southern Museums” in October. This symposium brought together curators who oversee collections of pre-1915 European prints at museums across the Southeast. Ciel Rodriguez , curatorial assistant in contemporary art, taught a one-week workshop called “Book Structures: Form and Content” at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in October. Located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Arrowmont is the oldest craft school in the state and offers a variety of educational opportunities for people of all skill levels and ages. Adam Clark , Museum Shop manager, participated in High Impact Leadership, a seven-week cohort program hosted by Learning & Development in UGA’s Office of Human Resources. Designed for new and emerging leaders, the program focuses on developing a strong leadership foundation through community, integrity and lifelong learning. Gallery guide Chevelyn Curtis moonlights as a romance writer and has self-published three books so far, with her most recent, “Lust at First Sight,” released in December. Her first title, “Our Sweetest Love,” was recently added to Barnes & Noble’s online store, and she’s already working on her fourth book. Michael Lachowski , public relations, was a featured guest on “Athens: Off the Record,” a new podcast launched this past fall by Visit Athens, the official destination marketing organization and convention and visitors bureau of Athens-
