Ver tigo is the result of an issue in your inner ear, also known as the “vestibular system.” Your vestibular system helps you maintain your balance and center of gravity by sending messages to your brain regarding your movement. When the vestibular system is impaired, the messages to your brain are altered, and your movement becomes affected. You may feel as if the world is spinning around you, you can’t focus your vision for prolonged periods, or you can’t stand/move appropriately without feel ing l ike you’ l l topple over. SOME COMMON CAUSES OF VERTIGO INCLUDE: • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Ver tigo (BPPV). This is the most common cause of ver tigo. It occurs when the tiny calcium crystals located in your ears break apar t and move around to different par ts of the ear that they are not supposed to be in. • Meniere’s disease. This occurs when fluid bui lds up in your ear(s). This typical ly includes ringing sounds in the inner ear and sudden waves of ver tigo that may last for hours. You may also experience momentary hearing losses. • Vestibular neuritis. This is an inner-ear infection that can cause ver tigo. • Migraines. Migraines can impact your vestibular system, and may be coupled with sensitivities to l ight or sound, or may also impair your vision. • Stroke. A stroke affects movement in your whole body. If you recently suffered a stroke, you may experience waves of ver tigo which may l inger for extended periods of time. Call Today: (345) 943-8700

Shrimp Fried Rice

• 8 oz peeled & raw shrimp • 2 tbsp minced fresh ginger • 4 cups stringless snap peas • 1 medium red bell pepper, cut into ½-inch pieces • 2 medium carrots, sliced • 4 scallions, chopped

• 1½ cups water • 1 cup instant brown rice • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce • 4 tsp soy sauce • 2 tsp toasted sesame oil • 4 tsp canola oil, divided • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten

Combine water and rice in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the water is absorbed, 10-12 min. Spread the rice out on a large baking sheet to cool. Combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce and sesame oil in a small bowl; set aside. Heat 1 tsp canola oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add eggs and cook, stirring to help break into smaller pieces, until just set, about 45 sec. Transfer the egg to a bowl. Add another 1 tsp canola oil to the skillet and return to medium-high heat. Add shrimp and cook, stirring occasionally, until pink, 1 1/2 to 2 min. Transfer the shrimp to the bowl. Heat the remaining 2 tsp oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. Add ginger and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 sec. Stir in snap peas, bell pepper, carrots and scallions; cook, stirring occasionally, until tender-crisp, 3 to 4 min. Stir in the rice and the reserved egg and shrimp; cook, stirring, until heated through, about 1 min. Remove from the heat and gently stir in the sauce mixture.

Postural education to optimize function.

Our therapists may use videonystagmography to determine whether a vestibular disease is causing your dizziness or vertigo. It is the only test available to decipher whether there is a vestibular loss in one or both ears. This non-invasive test uses infrared goggles to record a patient’s eye movements to determine how wel l the patient can react to visual stimul i responses sent from the vestibular system.

GET BACK TO GARDENING WITHOUT PAIN

Springtime is finally here, and with it comes a renewed sense of energy and drive to reach your fitness goals! After a long winter of being stuck inside, it ’s more impor tant than ever to stay on top of your heal th and make sure you’re engaging in physical activities. Gardening is an enjoyable way to get active, especially in the spring! Nothing beats the smel l of blooming flowers, fresh air, and warm sunshine. Here are a few tips to ensure you avoid injury and make the most out of gardening this season: 1. WARM-UP FIRST. Like any other physical activity, it is crucial to warm up before gardening. Morning gardeners need to make sure to walk around, or at least be up and moving, for about 45 minutes before starting any bending or lifting. 2. PRACTICE PROPER TECHNIQUE. One of the most common mistakes gardeners make is with their technique. Your back is incredibly strong and resi l ient when you maintain its natural curves.

In the lower back, the curve you need to maintain is cal led lordosis. When you stick your butt out, you will naturally increase the curve, a.k.a lordosis, and protect your back from injuries. Whether you are working with a shovel , rake, or spade, it is vital to keep your curves intact. Also, when bending to pul l weeds, it is better to kneel or squat so you can maintain the straight spine position and protect your back. 3. TAKE BREAKS. Taking frequent breaks or alternating tasks such as digging, lifting, and walking is beneficial for your body. Adding in some simple backbends before starting can also help decrease your risk of pain or injury. Are you ready to enjoy gardening this season? Practicing these three tips will help you prevent injury and make the most out of this season!
