The Gillespie story year by year
1950’s WHERE IT ALL BEGAN David Gillespie, a talented sculptor, eccentric artist, and founder of Gillespie, graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1959. He later established David Gillespie and Associates, starting with a small, creative team that included his wife, Anne.
1960’s MAKING A SCENE
1970’s FORWARD THINKING In response to the environmental concerns of GRP, including its dependence on fossil fuels and fire risks, Gillespie developed and patented Zerodec GRG, a ground breaking material for the interiors market. The projects span across the UK, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, showcasing their global reach and innovation.
1980’s ACQUISITION TIME
Collaborating with renowned artists such as Henry Moore, and Philip Jackson, Gillespie have produced exceptional sculpture, television and film props, along with a variety of architectural projects around the globe. Project production employs a diverse range of materials, including metal, plaster, and GRP.
The company grows and evolves focusing on the success of the innovative GRG material. Through strategic mergers and acquisitions, Gillespie become the leading international supplier of this specialist building material and the top provider of cladding for the continued expansion of shopping centres.
1990’s BORN TO SHOP In the 90s, Zerodec GRG continues to be the preferred choice for creating bespoke interior features, with ongoing advancements in moulding techniques and the development of standard elements like GRG column casings, bulkheads, and lighting features. Gillespie’s expanding reputation attracts prestigious capital projects from emerging markets such as Brunei, Singapore, and Japan.
2000’s ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT A period of rapid growth in the construction of airports, train and metro stations, and conference and cultural centres both locally and internationally, with Gillespie playing a pivotal role in enhancing the visitor experience.
2010’s POSITIONED FOR GROWTH With new production facilities in Europe and accelerated development of moulding and material technology, we integrate 3D modelling and CNC production into
2020’s onwards FUTURE FOCUSED After 33 years as part of the Tvedt Group, Gillespie is acquired by Errigal Group in 2022. With renewed energy and investment for growth, Gillespie is strategically positioned for continued success. As the internationally recognised inventor and pioneer of GRG, Gillespie remains at the forefront of innovation, producing the highest quality GRG. Our leadership in the industry positions us for ongoing expansion and development well into the future.
our standard offering. These advancements are accompanied by a strengthened focus on offsite fabrication and the associated environmental benefits.
This is supported by the establishment of a new production facility in Asia.

Materials and process
Unlocking limitless potential
Where it all begins Gypsum and glass fibres in their raw state - materials with endless potential once combined and transformed into Zerodec GRG.
The difference Gillespie uses independently tested and certified high quality raw materials in the manufacture of Zerodec GRG, with quality and consistency allowing us to offer endless architectural possibilities and infinitely repeatable performance and consistency for projects worldwide. Our Zerodec GRG products are designed in the UK and manufactured in our quality controlled factories in Poland and Ireland, using the latest 3D and CNC technology, ensuring optimal performance,
flexibility and minimal waste. Engineered for excellence
The two main constituents of Zerodec GRG are gypsum and glass fibre, but not any gypsum and glassfibre! Gypsum is a naturally occurring rock crystal which is mined and processed to create finished plasters. However, not all plasters are the same and at Gillespie we only use the very best Alpha plasters, highly refined to give a more uniform crystal structure than typical Beta plasters, resulting in a stronger and lighter product as well as using less water during the production cycle. The glass fibre we use is a continuous strand monofilament material with a water-soluble binder, giving Zerodec GRG its excellent properties, with the laminated matrix of plaster and monofilament glass fibres ensuring its unique strength and low weight. The finished product is cured using our unique de-humidification and drying process, extracting maximum moisture and creating a high quality material that is stronger, drier and more stable when installed.

Quality assured, available everywhere
Proven capability Through constant design development, modern manufacturing techniques and regular independent performance testing (including the latest BS/EN and ASTM requirements for fire and technical performance, backed up with an industry first EPD classification all in line with our ISO 9001 and 14001 management systems), Zerodec GRG provides consistent safety, reliability and performance. Global reach Gillespie has earned a reputation as a global leader in complex and innovative cladding projects, particularly the supply of large scale free-form organic cladding. We partner with leading architects, developers and contractors to bring their visions to life throughout the UK, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific regions. Sectors we work in Gillespie’s work features in projects across a wide range of sectors, including:
• Commercial • Transport • Arts & Culture • Hotels
• Residential • Education • Recreation • Leisure

Our process in detail
/ Design
Design Working with CAD 2D drafting, advanced 3D modelling and BIM software our designers collaborate with architects and clients to turn their most creative visions into reality. Manufacturing By blending traditional skills with advanced techniques and industry innovations such as additive and subtractive CNC processes creating a strong, lightweight and durable product. All our processes are subject to stringent quality control ensuring delivery of superior geometry, quality and performance. Installation Zerodec GRG is engineered so it
can be integrated with proprietary drywall systems, meaning installation can be carried out by the same labour. The panels are light, accurate and easy to install, requiring minimal gridwork due
to Zerodec GRG’s inherent strength. For complex 3D projects Gillespie can assist with onsite training and technical advice or even undertake the installation.

Bespoke projects
The essence of a bespoke project is when architects let their imagination run wild, creating designs without compromise. We respond to this through the use of 3D software to create unique free-form cladding designs, often with minimal repetition of shape or geometry. Gillespie has developed a specific solution for these, often low repetition, double-curved surfaces and can produce them to a very high quality and volume of production while at a minimum cost. No matter what stage Gillespie
gets involved with a project, the requirements are similar: understanding the client’s concepts and ideas and delivering them through a commercially viable solution that is manufacturable and deliverable within a reasonable time frame and then ensuring
they can be realised on a construction site to the required time, quality and budget.

15
Standard components
In addition to bespoke products, Gillespie has developed a range of standard GRG products for applications such as light troughs, blind boxes, access panels, corner trims etc. These are produced using the same high quality, low weight and high strength Zerodec GRG material, which outperforms all other fibrous plaster products.
Our unique Zerodec GRG allows such high volume products to be handled and installed with minimum damage, reducing post installation making good and ensuring excellent service life for any project. Our award winning design team
is widely experienced in the development and integration of our products into proprietary drywall systems. This is achieved through our highly effective fitting systems, making installation
simple for all types of installation teams and labour.
