Green Buildings
Global Vision
All over the world, people are becoming more environmentally friendly. For example, there are more and more green buildings in cities to reduce energy use in buildings. People hope that this will slow down global warming and provide them with a comfortable indoor environment. Hong Kong Science Park
There are many green buildings in the Hong Kong Science Park. Green 18 is one of them. It has many green features. There is a wind turbine on the rooftop. Its transparent roof allows natural sunlight to flow through the building. Moreover, the operable glass wall can adjust the amount of sunlight entering the building. This keeps the building warm in winter and cool in summer.
Changi Airport, Singapore
Singapore’s Changi Airport has the highest indoor waterfall in the world. It also brings nature into the building by planting water-growing plants. Singapore is hot throughout the year. By combining water and plants in the design, it lowers the room temperature, and helps save energy and reduce carbon emissions.
The office building of a power station in Norway
The office building of a power station in Norway managed to keep its steel and concrete structure during renovation. People reused the materials so that they could reduce energy use while replacing the old materials with new ones. There are heat transfer devices and solar power systems to heat and cool the building, which saves a large amount of energy. Moreover, heatproof walls, ceilings and windows can keep the room temperature comfortable. This green building produces more energy than it uses. It was awarded the ‘UN Global Climate Action Awards’ in 2023.
Let’s Think
1. What benefits do green buildings bring? 2. What features of green buildings should be promoted in Hong Kong?
