The Highland Quaich The word “Quaich” comes from the Gaelic Cuach, meaning “shallow cup” or “drinking cup.” Originating in the Scottish Highlands centuries ago, it became the favourite drinking vessel across Scotland. the cup of friendship
Traditionally, it was used to offer guests a “cup of welcome” or a parting drink. Its distinctive design—a shallow bowl with two handles (“lugs”)—has remained unchanged. Early Quaichs were made of staved wood, horn, or leather, later replaced by pewter and silver in the 17th century. Today, the Highland Quaich is a popular gift and cherished symbol of Scottish heritage.
