Optical Link ?
J WHY FIBER OPTICS LINKS ?
Fiber Optic links are ideally suited for High Speed,High reliability,EMI/RFI immune, digital data transmission in harsh environment conditions such as airborne avionics and computers,Commercial telecommunications, Outside Broadcast,Natural Disaster Search and Rescue operations,Geophysics,Battlefield communications and Weapon systems… In such environments a massive amount of data, voice and video has to be securely transmitted, sometimes over long distance, and in Harsh environment. This is exactly what Fiber Optics Links can do. Thanks to a very large bandwidth and a very small diameter,Fiber Optic Links do provide a very fast, reliable, light weight, quick and easy to deploy means of transmitting a mind-boggling quantity of information between various equipments or systems.
Because they only carry light pulses,Fiber Optic Links are totally immune to Electromagnetic or Radio Frequency interferences which are always a threat to the integrity of the information transmitted. In hazardous environment (i.e post natural disaster rescue operations) light transmitting Fiber Optic Links are safe as they can not generate electrical sparks that could for instance trigger a gas explosion. As a preferred choice for deployable Battlefield communication systems, where secrecy is paramount, Fiber Optic Links are best suited :the light pulses being transmitted can not be detected,or hacked into making the link almost “invisible”. Amphenol extensive range of Connectors for Fiber Optics Links provide Interconnect Solutions for most situations and environments :butt joint or expanded beam technology, single or multi- channel, singlemode or multimode fibers.

What is an optical link ?
In a basic fiber optic link, information such as video, voice and data have to be converted from a copper wire network to and optical one. The place of origin for all data entering in the optical network is called a transmitter. It converts coded electrical signals to equivalently coded light pulses. Light moves to the first connection, through the fiber
optic link (which might include several connections) and down to the last termini. Then the receiver decodes the optical pulses to an electrical signal. Amphenol supplies the complete interconnect assem- bly, including the connector, termini, fiber and optional accessories.

Glossary
J 7 DEFINITIONS TO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING ON LIGHT
“dB”definition : Expression of an optical power in log base. The 3dB Rule states that for every added 3dB of attenuation, one looses 50% of the power.

Insertion loss : Power loss created by an additional element on a link. Under log base,it is the ratio between the output power Pout and the input Pin. The lower the number is, the better the insertion loss (generally measured in dB) Return loss (single mode applications) : The return loss is the ratio of the reflected optical power Pback to the incident power Pin in dB unit. Hence,it is the back reflection power from a device on a link. The lower the negative value in dB is, the better (ie –50dB is better than –30dB) Wavelength : Considering monochromatic light as a wave,it is the distance between two peaks of signal (ie 850 and 1300nm for multimode applications; 1300 and 1550nm for single mode ones)

Mode : The light can be described as a wave going upon a specific path. This path is called a mode. In a multimode fiber, the light goes upon several paths in the fiber core. A single mode fiber allows the light to go only upon one way.

Fiber types : Waveguides are classified,on one hand by the core material index profile and on the other hand by the mode propagation ability. Single mode fibers have a constant index profile on the core cross section. Most multimode fibers are gradient index fibers. As opposed to traveling in a straight line in single mode fibers, the rays travel in a spiral form around the optical axis for the multimode ones.
