The Bledsoe Firm JustFamilyLaw.com | 949.363.5551 JUNE | 2023 THE GIFT OF TIME EMPOWER YOUR CHILDREN WITH TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Time management is a vital skill we refine throughout our lives. Most of us got our first taste of time management in school. You might have had to work on a project during a fixed period or finish a test within a time limit. As you grew older, your time management skills applied more to your work and personal life. You had to complete work projects promptly yet set aside time to spend with your children or significant other. You might believe time management comes naturally, but it doesn’t. We build that skill, and improving it takes time, effort, and dedication. If you want to give your kids the best opportunity for success in school, their professional careers, and their personal lives, you need to teach them valuable time management skills from an early age.

Find a way to connect with your child’s interests to make learning more fun. Get them their own calendar or planner and have them fill it out in a way that works for them (with your guidance). Encourage them to draw pictures related to their activities and

use crayons, markers, or colored pencils to fill in their days. Kids usually remember more when you incorporate hands-on activities.

Start them early. As mentioned, you don’t have to wait until your kid enters the first grade to teach them time. Encourage them to complete specific tasks and activities in a

fixed period. For example, give them 10 minutes to get dressed for preschool or kindergarten in the

morning or 10 minutes to clean up their toys. However, be sensitive to their ability to do the task effectively. You want to avoid frustration. Then, as they grow older, you can set reasonable time limits for other activities like chores and help them break larger homework projects into daily chunks so they learn how to avoid procrastination and deadline stress. Before long, they’ll be managing their time effectively on their own. Don’t overschedule or demand too much. Your child will learn to manage time at their own pace. Your encouragement is helpful, but going too far could adversely affect their development. If you overschedule them, they will crave free time to take a mental break, which will derail essential tasks. If you take your kid to every school activity or event, schedule some free time so they can have a day to unwind and appreciate the gift of time. Teaching your kids to manage time properly will help give them a head start in life. They’ll be more successful in their education, professional career, and personal relationships. —John Bledsoe

Show them how to measure and read the time. You don’t have to wait until your child enters the first grade to teach them how to read a clock. The earlier they understand how time works, the earlier they can start working on their time management skills. Teach how many seconds are in a minute and how many minutes are in an hour. Then, teach them how to read an analog clock. This will provide a jump-start on their time management skills, and they’ll know how to tell time before their classmates, giving them a leg up in an academic setting. Make time management fun. Learning can feel like a drag unless teachers, parents, or others make their lessons engaging. Don’t let your time management lessons fall flat.

DIVORCE AND BUSINESS OWNERSHIP

How to Navigate a Complex Situation

Divorce can be a complicated and emotional process for anyone, but the stakes become even higher when it involves California business owners. Not only are they dealing with the end of their marriage, but they also have to consider its impact on their business. In California, community property laws govern divorce, meaning all assets and debts acquired during the marriage are divided equally between the two spouses. This includes any business assets or debts, regardless of whether both spouses were actively involved.

including the value of the business, the contributions of each spouse to the company, and the financial needs of each spouse. Sometimes, the court may order the business to be sold and the proceeds divided equally between the spouses. Another option is to negotiate a settlement agreement outside of court. This can be a more cost-effective and efficient way to divide business assets, as both parties can work together to devise a solution that works for everyone. In addition to dividing business assets, California business owners going through a divorce may also need to consider how the divorce will impact their business operations. They may need to restructure the business or make other changes to ensure its success after the divorce.

One option for California business owners is to enter into a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement outlining how the business will be divided in case of a divorce.

This can help protect the business and ensure it remains intact after the divorce. However, without either agreement in place, the court will need to determine how to divide the business assets and debts. This can be a complex process that requires the assistance of an experienced attorney.

Overall, divorce can be a challenging and stressful experience for California business owners. Still, with proper legal guidance and support, they can navigate

the process and emerge with protected business and financial interests. Call us today if you have any questions or need assistance.

The court will consider several factors when dividing business assets,

Walk Away With Clarity

Inspired by TheSpruceEats.com

Divorce is a difficult process, especially when one spouse feels wronged by the other. So, distinguishing between an evil spouse and a broken one can provide clarity and even make things more bearable. An evil spouse intentionally engages in harmful behavior that hurts their partner or the marriage. This can include cheating, lying, and being abusive or controlling. An evil spouse may also try to hide assets or manipulate the legal system to gain an advantage in the divorce. However, a broken spouse may have made mistakes in the marriage or had personal issues that contributed to the relationship breakdown. A broken spouse may struggle with addiction, mental health issues, or financial problems that strain the marriage. Being a broken spouse does not excuse bad behavior like infidelity or abuse. However, understanding the root cause of these behaviors can help both parties move forward productively and compassionately. Protecting yourself and your interests is essential when going through a divorce with an evil spouse. This may involve working with an experienced attorney who can help you navigate the legal system and ensure you receive a fair settlement. However, with a broken spouse, approach the divorce with empathy and understanding. This may involve seeking therapy or counseling to work through lingering issues and learning how to communicate effectively with your ex-spouse. Whether your spouse is evil or broken, you must focus on your well- being during the divorce process. Take time for self-care, seek support from friends and family, and focus on your personal and professional goals as often as needed. Ultimately, going through a divorce is never easy, but with the right mindset and support, you can emerge stronger and more resilient than ever.
