SPECIAL EQUIPMENT The interior cage area has an extensive oil hydraulic access control system which enabled the staff to remotely open and close access paths for the chimps. This system is at the end of its useful life and should be removed to avoid oil leaking. PLUMBING The plumbing fixtures in the restrooms are in reasonable condition. The porcelain is not stained and the chrome is intact. The restrooms may not meet current ADA requirements. There was no evidence of problems with the existing domestic water, waste and vent piping. Cast iron waste and vent piping can have a very long life and, where possible, consideration should be given to reuse of portions of this system. Hot water is provided to lavatories and custodial closets and the animal areas from small electric hot water heaters and a steam fired water heater. The dominant use of hot water in the facility is for the animal areas. It is anticipated that these heaters would be replaced in a future renovation. There is extensive plumbing, security plumbing fixtures, and filtered water features for the animal areas. It is anticipated that these systems will be removed in when the building is renovated. The domestic water system and piping throughout the building was designed, and installed in 1993. The materials used vary based on the size required. Smaller piping is primarily copper with sweat joints on distribution lines 2" and smaller, then larger piping is Type "L" hard copper tube with lines sized 2" up to 4". Domestic Water
