thought of one of the last things his mother told him before he had taken off for the Black Hills. “ Son, sooner or later every man comes to the place where he realizes that he needs God. When you come to that place, don’t hesitate to call on Him.” Call on Him? Would he dare after the way he had treated Him? For a long time he debated with himself as he lay there in the blackness of the tunnel, suffering as he never had before. Finally, in desperation, he realized there was nothing else to do; he had no choice in the matter for there was nobody else he could call on for help. I learned that he had come to town several weeks before, talking about his gold strike, but that no one had taken him seriously because he had been drinking. Drinking? That was not like Zeke. I became very concerned and felt that I should go to his place right away. It was dusk when I reached his shack. There was no light in the window. I wondered if Zeke had left the country. I put Deerfoot in the corral which had a small lean- to at one end. Then I went to the shack. Since it was empty I started through the tunnel, carrying one of the lanterns I found in the shack. I hadn’t gone very far when Zeke heard me coming. He started to call and holler. Well, you must have some idea how glad he was to see me after being pinned down by that pile of rocks and timber since ' the night before. And believe me,
