Bald Eagles winter at Johnson Lake and surrounding areas and White Pelicans begin
to arrive in the early spring when the ice is breaking up into areas of open water. Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District’s Eagle Viewing facilities will be open to the public at Johnson No. 2 Hydroplant the first weekend of January and continue to be open every weekend through the end of February. Hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the J-2 site. You can also view many bald eagles on and around Johnson Lake during the winter months. Each year the bald eagles travel to areas along the Platte River from as far away as Canada, Alaska and the Great Lakes state to look for fish and other food sources. They can be seen in the trees around the lake, as well as standing on the ice near areas of open water. The bald eagles and the white pelicans are a spectacular sight to behold!
