It is strongly recommended that gauge glasses on steam boilers are always left open to the boiler during normal operation and the connections to the gauge glasses shall be fitted with auto shut off devices for safety of boiler operatives. The levels of attendance and manual testing will depend on the boiler equipment layout. They should be considered in conjunction with the findings of the risk assessment and information on the type and level of manning that is intended to be employed. It is more important that the target levels of monitoring and supervision are met rather than having a boiler that matches the example in the diagrams.

Note – for a TDS alarm to be effective, the probe must be directly mounted on the boiler shell, and not located in the blowdown line.
