Gary Olsen, departing London President

LONDON

Creating the perfect London President

H onorary member Gary Webb thanks departing London President, Gary Olsen, for all he has done for the FMB. These are his words. Recipe to create a president Step 1: Start with a good helping of CEO who, off his own back, will walk into a non-member’s business in Hither Green and extol the benefits of FMB membership. Step 2: When membership has been accepted, encourage new members to attend a networking conference. Good speakers at a retrofit event are an ideal addition. Step 3: Add a handful of already active board members and past presidents to the mix. Step 4: Engage with new members and gently suggest they may benefit from joining a committee or working group. * Important * Take to the Mitre pub and infuse with quality beer. Final step: After adding a good meeting and meal (the Bleeding Heart is always a smart choice) add more beer and persuade to become president. This is best achieved with the addition of a London consigliere (advisor) and

voila ! A fantastic London president is made.

Congratulations to the successful candidates joining the London Board. These 14 people will represent your interests in the capital for the next two years. They are: You have a new board! Seriously though, Gary’s short time with the London Board has been a whirlwind. He has been involved with the Standards Committee and the CLC Materials Group. He’s dealt with meetings moving to Zoom during Covid and, for the last four years, he has chaired the board with knowledge and enthusiasm, encouraging new board members to such an extent that there are now up to three people applying for every vacant post. His move to RNLI as Regional Estates Manager (Coastal) RNLI North & East Region will be a great loss to London, but we are sure it’s a fantastic opportunity for him, his family and his new colleagues. He has been a mentor, valued colleague and, above all, a friend to many of us – and there will always be a seat with his name on in London should he wish to sit on it! The London Board and past presidents thank Gary for all he’s done. We wish him and his family well and sincerely hope he stays in touch.
