THE TEXAS BASEBALL RANCH SUMMER PROGRAM …

Often Copied, Never Duplicated

total number of athletes setting personal bests on velocity while reducing discomfort (and in many cases eliminating all pain from the arm — especially the elbow and shoulder) has now become the rule rather than the exception. So, in short … our process has evolved into something very special and exceedingly rare; this is the ability to IMPROVE arm health and the durability of a throwing athlete WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY enhancing velocity, command, and the efficacy of secondary offerings (such as curveballs, sliders, and change-ups). The Ranch Extended Stay Summer Program truly represents the Holy Grail of thrower development. Over the past 17 years, the copycats have failed spectacularly because they haven’t figured out that the secret is not in weighted balls or throwing large volumes around in the weight room or extreme long toss. The Ranch “secret” is in our proprietary process, which amalgamates massive simultaneous action and hyper-personalization into a weekly schedule. THAT aforementioned coalescence is the essence of the world’s most successful throwing development program: The Ranch Extended Stay Summer Program.

We all intuitively know we have succeeded in creating something very special when others attempt to copy specific structure and processes.

As writer Charles Caleb Colton once said, “Imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery.”

For over a decade now, the Texas Baseball Ranch® has brought together an amazing, holistic, integrated, intensive, and hyper- personalized summer training process which has changed the lives of hundreds of aspiring young baseball athletes. The baseball universe has definitely taken notice, and literally dozens and dozens of places around the USA and Canada have tried to replicate pieces of the Ranch Summer Program. But try as they might, the Ranch (with its very specific protocols and attention to testing and programming details) remains considerably outside of people’s capability to duplicate.

Our process began earnestly in 2003 and has continually been improved, refined, and upgraded each and every year. Now, the

The young men that participated this summer did a fabulous job! Here are the Session 2 morning and afternoon groups.

• The eight factors that influence recovery

If you’re a pitcher who has relaxed your training during the last few months, you’re at serious risk for an arm injury. Getting back on the mound and throwing hard again, after months of not doing so, is a recipe for disaster. Arm health and

performance are not separate ideas; the two are tied together. If you have to rest and can’t throw bullpens or train between starts, you’re not developing as a pitcher and your future is diminished. Recovery is essential because it gives you the ability to bounce back so you can throw more often and be more consistent. We’ve put together a complete package called the Recovery Enhancement Program to help you significantly reduce your risk of injury as you get back to pitching. From our team of experts and league professionals, the program provides a video and written instruction that covers:

SKIP THE STUDENT DEBT 3 Ways to Pay for College That Aren’t Loans

WORK-STUDY Depending on your child’s financial need, their college or university may be able to set them up with a part-time position with an hourly rate on campus. Work-study positions are often community service oriented and/or matched with the student’s field of study, and the jobs in these programs may be on or off campus. Alternatively, students can also look for other on-campus jobs that aren’t part of a work-study program. Before the school year starts, many schools post job openings for positions like computer lab assistants or event caterers. PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS There is no shortage of private scholarships. The challenge is finding and applying for them. This can take time, but it’s often worth the effort. If you can’t find any scholarships your child is eligible for online, then try using an app like Scholly. It’s designed to help students and parents find and apply for scholarships without having to search all over the internet. Another great resource is your student’s high school guidance counselor. They often have resources about local and regional scholarships that may be worth looking into.

We all know how expensive college can be. The bills can pile up fast, and in many cases, paying that debt off can take years, if not decades, especially if private loans are involved. That said, if you have kids who are getting ready to graduate high school, then don’t let the cost of higher education scare you away. If you

can’t pay out of pocket, you can help your child apply for loans, but if you’re looking to mitigate debt, or eliminate it entirely, here are some other popular options. GRANTS Grants are similar to scholarships in that they don’t need to be repaid. Many colleges, states, and other organizations award grants based on a number of factors, like academic standing and the income of one or both parents as reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA. A great starting point for parents who are helping their kids look for grants is the Federal Student Aid website: StudentAid.gov/understand-aid/types/grants.

BREAKING THE BREAKING BALL STIGMA The Truth About Curveballs, Sliders, and Cutters

or “turn” the curveball, making the efficient deceleration/ pronation of the arm even more difficult. In fact, sometimes incorrect instruction literally makes an efficient deceleration impossible. In addition, many youth pitchers fall in love with the pitch. They throw 40%–60% breaking balls because the hitters they face at their level usually have little experience hitting curveballs and are easily fooled by such a pitch. The curveball/slider/cutter makes the deceleration of the arm more complicated. While it’s not a great idea to complicate an already inefficient and immature movement pattern, the risks are not nearly enough to warrant banning the curveball or promoting it as the primary cause of injury. Such a call for action is an overreaction and represents a significant inferential leap. Eliminating the curveball in games will have very little impact on injuries and will introduce other negative elements into the game — like amateur umpires determining if a pitcher actually threw a breaking ball or a slip/split change-up (they have their hands full with strike/ ball and safe/out already) and coaches and players trying to scam or stretch the new rule to their advantage.

The curveball is only one of many factors that contribute to injury for youth pitchers. Every prepubescent pitcher’s growth plates are wide-open for stretches in their early baseball career, so their soft tissue and bone are already more at risk from the stress of throwing a baseball at high speed. Most youth pitchers also have asymmetries, strength imbalances, and mobility/ flexibility constraints or

limitations, which will complicate any movement pattern, so their soft tissue and bones are already more at risk from the stress of throwing a baseball at high end-point velocities. Many youth pitchers are taught to throw the curveball incorrectly — to manipulate

THIS MONTH IN BASEBALL HISTORY The MLB Comes to TV

On Aug. 26, 1939, the first ever televised Major League Baseball game was broadcast on the station that would become WNBC- TV. It was a game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York. This was “a spectacle” for those viewers who actually owned televisions because regular network broadcasting did not yet exist. Television in general was still a newer concept, and the MLB was praised for helping usher in more regular sports programming. Even though the crude broadcast only consisted of two stationary camera angles (the third baseline and one high above home plate) and could barely capture the fast-moving ball, it was still hailed as a success, encouraging more people to become engaged in the sport. Televised sports have come a long way since those first innovative days.

arms as you go. For an added challenge, do lunges as you vacuum and remember to keep your toes pointed straight ahead and your knees bent at 90-degree angles.

Everyone knows how labor-intensive cleaning can be. A long day of scrubbing down your house is a great way to work your muscles and get your blood pumping, so crank up some tunes, grab a mop, and get ready to transform your cleaning routine into a great workout. To get physical benefits from cleaning, you need to turn up the intensity of your methods. Exaggerate your motions, pick up your pace, and keep your abs tight and knees flexed. Nearly any chore can be turned into an exercise, but here are some ideas to get you started.

PICK UP: Instead of simply bending over to pick up toys or clothes, do a squat with every item you grab. Remember to use your legs, not your back. You can also do squats while unloading the dishwasher or with any other chore that involves repeated bending.

WIPE DOWN: Whether you’re wiping windows or scrubbing appliances, do big, exaggerated arm circles until your muscles start to burn and make sure you’re switching arms as you go.

COOK: It’s not cleaning, but it’s still a chore with useful downtime. While food is simmering or thawing in the microwave, do some pushups, situps, or planks to get your muscles moving.

You can implement dozens of exercises to turn mundane activities into beneficial workouts. Some chores will burn more calories than others, but every bit of activity helps. Now’s the time to work your way to a cleaner house and a healthier you.

VACUUM: Vacuum briskly nonstop for at least 20 minutes, switching
