Did I see this combination coming clearly from the beginning when preparing for a career path after college? No. Would I have even thought of designing my life this way? Never. It was from all the experiences I learned. At every expected and unexpected moment in life, there was a lesson. Embracing the learning from both good & bad. Each opportunity to recognize a gift, skill, or experience I loved doing and sharing. Even knowing I wanted to be an architect as a child, I had no clue how that would unfold in unique ways. I did earn a college degree in architecture, and typically it moves one towards licensing as an architect. Instead, I never licensed and would be directing architects and designers while building two department stores and coordinating design for a third at the same time before the age of thirty-two. Opportunities unfold when you stay open to exploring in the chaos. A work opportunity can surprise you when you discover you enjoy aspects of
business others find difficult or boring. Embracing the unexpected in ourselves and helping others around us to find it for themselves can make the most productive teams and viable business opportunities thrive and grow. When we recognize how powerfully we want to be heard in the world, it allows us to listen to others with the passion for being heard instead of only responding. Changes in the world are faster now than ever. The need to flex, pivot, or recognize when things are imploding will continue to occur. If we hold on to old ways, we can quickly be useless. Be a generalist instead of a specialist It appears to me we require more generalists, with greater diverse knowledge and different skills, who can shift and maneuver through changes. They are better equipped than those with a highly focused skill set that are currently being rumored to be replaced by machines, robotics, or AI. The future will require changes to occur faster. Generalists have a broader basis to pull resources from to create solutions.
