RUSSELL | Ron Barr has added his name to the growing list of candidates running for one of the four positions as councillor in Russell Township. Barr raised his grown children here and has lived in North Russell for 15 years. His business experience is ex-

desire to see the township be more aware of hiring local residents for Township con- tracts. He is very critical of the “governments of the day” at all levels. “Governments have made it so tough on business- es that pro!t is a foreign word, but public servants don’t have to sacri!ce. They’re gluttons at the trough.” Regarding growth he says, “I’m all for expansion and healthy growth, but with sub- division after subdivision be- ing approved, eventually the taxpayers, through their taxes, pay for the infrastructure that developments need. Taxes go up while our quality of life goes down.” He would like to see more transparency in Township Hall, including dis- cussions with developers. He worries about the pro- posed private mega-land!lls, one proposed for North Rus- sell and the other for Boundary Road, very near the township’s border. “Council should take a !rm stand on the proposed second site and be defending us. It would have a profound e"ect on the whole commun- ity. We’ve got to go to bat and help out the groups opposing

tensive with a background in ac- counting and marketing. He cur- rently manages seven businesses including the Greater Ottawa Trucking Association. The last four years he has “pounded the pave- ment”, to make Ontario workers and contractors a priority in On- tario, included being on the front line of the truckers’ protest be- tween Ottawa and Hull last year. He is also well-known locally as a business manager in the horse-ra- cing industry for 19 years, includ- ing the Rideau Carleton Racetrack. He describes his previous work experience as, “Walking into situ- ations in peril and understanding the business of business,” which he feels describes the situation in Russell Township. He ran for mayor in the last mu- nicipal election and this year is running for councillor. His main reasons for running are concern about the township’s growing debt, concern about the pro- posed land!ll sites and the ex- isting council’s near-silence on the issue, a council he says is too friendly with developers, and his

both sites,” he says. “Council is ignoring the people on this issue. Their ears are shut.” Regarding !nances he feels that the burgeoning debt which he estimated at around $36 million must be brought under control. “I propose we take a holiday on pet projects for a couple of years and work on important things like !xing what needs to be !xed. Never mind dog kennels and dog parks and obscene wages.” 156 th Russell Fair special thanks We would like to thank all our sponsors, volunteer and everyone who helped make this year a great success! www.rto-ero.org
