observed countless people from all walks of life in real-life high-pressure situations. I’ve been amazed by how people handle themselves — both good and bad — and that is something to learn from. I also get to observe the other lawyers at work. When I was starting out, I paid close attention to the presentations of the veteran attorneys. I admired how they argued a point but knew that their particular style was not for me and that I would have to come up with my own. I have gotten to know many of them and have had many discussions regarding arguing a case. A mentor can be someone you barely know or someone you’ve known your whole life. Having people in your life you can learn from, even if it's just little things, helps a lot. Everyone and anyone can be a teacher. If you have one mentor in life you really look up to, that’s great, but I think having many mentors is just as important. You need mentors for the different parts of your life, such as one for your work life and one for your personal life. Understanding that you don’t learn from just one person keeps your mind open. I’m very willing to see what others can do better than me or mistakes they’ve made that I can watch out for and grow from. If I had been the oldest in my family, I probably would’ve had a different life because I’d be taking that first step instead of learning from those around me before making a decision. I was pretty lucky. I got to look before I leapt. –Neil Crowley “Everyone and anyone can be a teacher. HAVING MANY MENTORS Allows You to Learn a Little Bit of Everything

an area of law that did not fit my personality, which would have been terrible for me.

Throughout my life, I’ve never thought about having just one mentor. As you progress in life, you tend to pick up bits and pieces here and there from all the people you meet. I’ve learned a lot from many individuals — friends, family, clients, former bosses, and other lawyers. It's hard to say that I have just one mentor when I’ve been influenced by so many. When I was growing up, many of the people in my neighborhood were older than me, and I was the youngest of four boys. I always wanted to tag along with my older brothers. I would sit back and watch what they would do before I stepped forward. In this way, I learned from their mistakes and successes, so when I finally took action for myself, I had a better idea of what to do. In law school, I took clinical courses where I was able to practice law as a student under the supervision of an attorney. By handling actual cases, I was able to decide what area of law I wanted to pursue and which area I definitely did not. Without that experience, I may have pursued

One of the clients I had was a therapist, and he talks about being “your best you,” and says that if you try to be someone else, you’ll never be comfortable. This really hit home for me. I think it's essential to be yourself and not force yourself to be anyone else. Everyone experiences life differently — people go down their own paths and experience unique struggles. I have a lot of family in Ireland, and every time I visit them, I notice that they act just like me. Going through life, there is this pressure to be a certain way or follow in someone’s footsteps, but you don’t have to. Seeing my family exhibit the same characteristics I do makes me realize how important it is to be yourself throughout your life. Court is another place where I learn from people. As someone who has spent a thousand hours in court waiting for my cases to be called, I have

Summoned to Court Jury Duty Myths

trust. You can alternate drivers weekly, which provides the opportunity for you to focus your attention on other priorities — or if you’re lucky, have some freedom. THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB Technology makes organization easier and more accessible than ever. By using a tool like a shared calendar, you can coordinate the entire family’s schedule so you never miss a beat. And apps like Mealime and MealBoard give you the ability to whip up food that is cost-effective and delicious. TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAMWORK While you’re busy trying to rally the troops at soccer practice, the scene at home resembles a NO VOTING, NO JURYDUTY According to another circulating myth, if you aren’t registered to vote, you don’t have to serve jury duty. Many people believe this myth because voting enters you into the jury duty pool, but there are other means by which citizens are chosen. Other ways you’re entered into the pool include buying a home, paying taxes, and getting a driver’s license. Even if you aren’t registered to vote, you’re still liable to be summoned. SERVING JURYDUTYWILLGET YOU FIRED If you’re worried about getting fired for serving jury duty, you can breathe easy. Your employer cannot fire you once you’ve been

selected for jury service. In fact, if your boss threatens to fire you for it, they will face the penalties, which include fines and even jail time. Many employers know and understand this, but if yours doesn’t, you can submit a file of complaint to the trial court administrator, and they will take care of the rest for you. The system to select jurors has been around for a while, and those involved know what they’re doing. It's best to go in with an open mind and be completely honest. After all, it is your civic duty to do so.

School has started. Youth sports are in full swing. Work is crazy. Food has become more about necessity than enjoyment. All of this can only mean one thing: Fall has begun. The crazy schedules this time of year can make it tough for parents to keep their heads on straight; making it through the insanity sometimes feels more like survival than life. But there are tactics you can employ to turn the tide and find more time for yourself. TAG TEAM There’s no reason to try to do everything on your own. The phrase “It takes a village to raise a child” exists because managing the stressors of life requires help. A great place to start is by establishing car pools with a parent group you There are so many rumors about jury duty that it can be difficult to know which ones are true. Here are three of the most popular speculations, debunked. ADMITTING BIASWILLENSURE YOUR DISMISSAL If you admit that you are biased when you serve jury duty, it does not guarantee your dismissal. In fact, a judge cannot dismiss you for being biased — but an attorney can. In addition, attempting to portray yourself as a biased person can put you in a troubling situation. Attorneys and judges have been selecting jurors for a long time and know when someone is lying to them. Your best bet will be to give honest answers to the questions they ask.

horror movie. Laundry is piling up, food is spoiling in the fridge, and the dust bunnies around the house now have names. Housecleaning is a part-time job in its own right. The only way to stay on top of duties around the house is to work together. A chore chart with clear responsibilities is a great place to start. Whether you have one child or eight, everyone is capable of pitching in. You can have all the organizational abilities in the world, but the best way to manage life’s madness isn’t by directing day-to-day tasks; it’s by managing stress. Instead of using these tools to control life, look at them as a way to free up time so you can decompress and enjoy the things you love.

Did Your Workout Routine Take a Summer Vacation? Jump Back in With These Strategies

2. Set yourself up for success. You would go to that 5:30 p.m. boot camp class, but it’s right in the middle of your daughter’s dance practice. Getting to the gym is half the battle, so make it easier on yourself by preparing in advance. Find a facility with a schedule that easily fits yours. If you’re planning to work out in the morning, set your clothes out the night before, and choose an energetic song for your alarm. If there’s a class after work, consider leaving an extra set of gym clothes at your office so you’ll never have an excuse not to go. 3. Make your workout an unavoidable part of your day. It’s tempting to join your coworkers for happy hour, especially when that outdoor patio is just around the block from your office. But what if it were that easy to get to the gym? Look for facilities that are on your

With barbecues, trips to the pool, and indulging in refreshing beverages on the patio, summer is full of relaxation and fun. But those heart- pumping, muscle-building trips to the gym may have become less frequent during the warmer months. If your workout routine went on its own summer vacation, here are three strategies to get back to it. 1. Find something you like to do. Maybe part of the reason your fitness routine took a break was because you didn’t enjoy doing it. If that’s the case, re-evaluate your options. There is no superior form of exercise, and there are plenty of options to align with your preferences. If you couldn't get enough of hiking in national parks over the summer, join a hiking group in your community. If you prefer being on a team, look for a local adult league for your favorite sport.

commute, near your work, or close to home. If it’s easy to get to, you’ll be more likely to go and still have time for that drink afterward. It may take time to make your workout routine a seamless part of your life, but implementing some of these strategies will make it easier and more enjoyable. You might even find yourself looking forward to back-to-the-gym season!

Why Labor Day Is Indebted to the Pullman Strike

How a Railroad Protest Laid the Foundation for a National Holiday The Pullman Strike and the Origin of Labor Day

(ARU). But Pullman, stubborn as he was, barely acknowledged the strike was happening, and he refused to meet with the organizers.

Today, Labor Day mostly means a day off and the closure of public pools. But when it was first created, it was a president’s desperate attempt to curb the tension after one of the most violent strike breakups in American history. In the late 19th century, the workers of the Pullman Company, which manufactured luxury train cars, all lived in a company-owned town. George Pullman, the owner, lived in a mansion overlooking houses, apartments, and crammed-together barracks, all of which were rented by the thousands of workers needed for the operation. For some time, the town operated without a hitch, providing decent wages for the workers while netting the higher-ups millions of dollars. But after the economic depression of the 1890s brought the country to its knees, everything changed. George Pullman slashed his workers’ wages by nearly 30 percent, but he neglected to adjust the rent on the company- owned buildings in turn. As a result, life became untenable in the town, with workers struggling to maintain the barest standards of living for themselves and their families.

The tension increased when Eugene Debs, the president of the American Railway Union, organized a boycott of all trains that included Pullman cars. The strike continued to escalate until workers and Pullman community members managed to stop the trains from running. Eventually, President Grover Cleveland sent in soldiers to break up the strike. Violence ensued, with soldiers making a great effort to quell the strike at its core. By the time the violence ended, 30 people had lost their lives and an estimated $80 million in damages had been caused throughout the town. A few months later, President Grover Cleveland declared Labor Day a federal holiday. Many experts believe that this act was an effort to build rapport among his pro-labor constituents after handling the incident so poorly.

This month, as you fire up the barbecue and enjoy your day off, take a moment to remember the workers who fought for labor rights in our country.

In response the workers began a strike on May 11, 1894. As the event ramped up, it gained the support of the powerful American Railway Union
