The Elyria Office Gets Hydrated! Have you heard of the water challenge? In November, the Elyria office decided to take up the challenge to get hydrated! It all started when the Elyria staff noticed Dr. Seim carrying a large 1-gallon water bottle. But this wasn’t an ordinary water bottle. It was covered in inspirational sayings like, “Keep chugging” and “You made it!” It also was covered in numbers (more on that in a moment). Everyone asked Dr. Seim, “What’s up with the water bottle?” Turns out, it was all part of a water challenge — a challenge to drink a full gallon of water every day as a way to stay hydrated and healthy. Dr. Seim asked the office if they wanted to join in on the challenge. Everyone was on board immediately! Dr. Seim purchased special 1-gallon water bottles for the staff and the water challenge began! Here’s how it works: At the start of every day, you fill your water bottle with a gallon of water. Along the side of the bottle, you’ll find numbers indicating the time of day. The idea is to drink a certain amount of water every hour until you’re finished with the gallon. How much water should you drink every day? The traditional rule of thumb states you should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, or 64 ounces per day. However, newer research states you should drink The Water Challenge
half your body weight in ounces of water per day. For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink 75 ounces of water per day.
There are 128 ounces in one gallon of water. That may seem like a lot, but it’s perfectly healthy! Staying hydrated is great for your skin, hair, and may even help you sleep better at night. (Just give yourself a cutoff time to stop drinking water before bed)! It may also help you lose weight, because the more you drink, the fuller you feel, which discourages you from eating too much.
And so, the water challenge continues! What will the results be? Who will make it through the challenge? Stay tuned!
(Hydration pro tip: If drinking that much water sounds boring, go ahead and add a little something extra to it, such as lemon or other sugar-free flavors!)
