As 2022 comes to an end and 2023 approaches, I’ve decided to start my New Year’s resolutions early. I started a few months ago, but I plan to continue my resolution into the new year and beyond. If you’re wondering why I got ahead of the ball or what my resolution is, I’ll tell you — and I think you should join me! I have recently found out that my sugar numbers were going up and so I started researching how to live a healthier lifestyle. In doing so, I’ve learned some pretty shocking facts about sugar. Did you know that the United States is the country that ingests the most sugar by far? And by “by far,” I mean the average American eats about 66 pounds of added sugar annually!

your teeth to decay faster. On top of that, it contributes to periodontal disease, and the bacteria that penetrate your gums can get into your blood and cause heart disease. This is especially problematic because sugar also weakens your immune system, so bacteria travels to your heart much easier — and faster. So after reading about how sugar breaks down nearly every part of my body, eliminating it from my diet became my No. 1 New Year’s resolution. I decided to become what I call a “nutritarian,” which means I pick foods I know will fuel my body, not just fill my belly. Making healthier choices isn’t easy, but I’ve resolved to do my best. If you’re interested in joining me in my New Year’s resolution, here is how you can get started. Drink plenty of water! Avoiding dehydration is essential when practicing a healthy lifestyle, especially when eliminating sugar. Dehydration only exacerbates sugar’s effects on your body, so those rotten teeth and wrinkles will happen sooner than you think. Practice mindful eating. Before you eat something, think about the benefits it will bring your body. If that mid- afternoon Snickers bar isn’t offering you the nutrients you need, you should probably skip it. If you filter the foods you eat by how they’re helping your body, eliminating the bad stuff becomes much more manageable.

The 80/20 rule is the best way to ensure you stick to your new healthy lifestyle because it doesn’t wholly forbid sweet treats or special snacks. To use this rule, you should eat healthy 80% of the time. The other 20% of the time, you can be more relaxed and enjoy a few treats! Move your body! Since I started my resolution, I’ve begun working out six days a week, three with a personal trainer and three focusing on cardio. Physical activity helps manage blood sugar levels, so if you’re feeling sugar withdrawals and cravings, go for a walk or head to the gym. By cutting back on sugar and focusing more on nutrient-rich foods, you’ll see a big difference in your mood, sleep, energy, skin, and mental clarity. You’ll lower your risk of diabetes and heart disease, too. Thanks to my New Year’s resolution of changing my diet and exercise, my doctor lowered me to a “pre-diabetic” status. I feel better than ever, and I’m excited to keep my new lifestyle going into 2023. I came across an article that described an experiment using sugar and rats. In this experiment, the rats were given two levers to press, one that released sugar for them to eat and one that released a highly addictive drug. Can you guess which lever the rats pushed more? It was the sugar! I found a never-ending list of ways sugar is destructive to our bodies. It’s a major catalyst for obesity, diabetes, and decreased liver function. It even causes wrinkles in our skin by reducing its elasticity.

Locks of Love SON MAKES A WIG FOR HIS MOTHER

Melanie Shaha is currently fighting her third brain cancer battle. For 15 years, she’s been suffering from a benign tumor on her pituitary gland. Although she doesn’t mind being sick, going to her appointments, focusing on her treatment, and talking to loved ones about her cancer, she doesn’t like looking sick. If you didn’t know Shaha, you wouldn’t realize she was battling cancer. But this suddenly changed once she lost all of her hair. She had two surgeries, in 2003 and 2006, in hopes of removing the tumor on her pituitary gland, but they weren’t successful. Then, when she

After graduating from college, Matt began growing his hair out. In no time, he had long and luscious hair. His mother tried to dissuade him from cutting it, but Matt wanted to help her feel confident and comfortable in her skin. So, he chopped it off and sent his locks to Compassionate Creations, a hair company in Newport Beach, California, that created a wig for his mother. Now, Shaha has a piece of her son to take everywhere with her beautiful new tresses. “The color is spectacular, and we had it cut and styled with a hairdresser. Matt said it looked great on me. It sure fills your emotional cup,” Shaha says.

Danglefest Is Back! Come Out and Cheer the Malone Jr. Huskies to Victory

Winter in Malone is the perfect time to brew a warm cup of coffee, bundle up, and watch a hockey tournament! Starting Jan. 14, the Malone Minor Hockey league will begin its second annual Danglefest tournament. The tournament is open for two U14 divisions, meaning 14-year-olds at the “B” and “C” levels are eligible to participate. Teams that enter the tournament will play four games in a round-robin format. This means each team will play every other team in the tournament, with crossovers, before moving on to championship games. Each game is played in three equal periods of 20 minutes, so plan to be at each match for at least an hour. There is a limit of six teams per division, and the first six eligible registered teams are given priority. After the first six teams are accepted, Malone Minor Hockey will create a wait list so other groups can continue to join.

Games are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, and will continue through Monday, Jan. 16, at the Malone Civic Center, located at 88 State St., Malone, NY 12953. There will be tournament gifts for everyone participating, including medals for winners and finalists. During the round-robin games, a “player of the game” will be announced for each match. Danglefest merchandise will be available at the Civic Center starting on day one, so be sure to stop by the booth and support our Malone Jr. Huskies! So far, the tournament lineup includes the Camillus Cougars C, Malone Jr. Huskies, Rochester Jr. Americans B, South Stormont Selects B, and the Webster Cyclones B. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, Jan. 14, at 8 a.m., and come out to the Malone Civic Center to cheer on our Jr. Huskies! See you there!

THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE GOLD CUFFLINKS Chicago’s ‘Dentist to the Queen’

Way back in 1959, the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip visited Chicago for 14 hours — and during that small window, the queen went to the dentist. Apparently, Queen Elizabeth had lost a filling in one of her back teeth and needed a dentist to replace it between royal sightseeing stops at places like the Museum of Science and Industry. She chose Dr. Norman Olson, a dentist who practiced out of the nearby Drake hotel. Why Dr. Olson? Talking about the incident years later, Dr. Olson’s daughter told the Chicago Tribune that he was likely selected thanks to his reputation and location. “It was a very secure hotel,” she said. “I’m sure it was easy for the Secret Service and everybody else to guard the place, and in my opinion, my dad was the best dentist in Chicago.” 15 Minutes for a Lifetime of Fame It’s funny to think of a queen in the dental chair, but the way Queen Elizabeth paid for her procedure is even more curious. Reportedly, Dr. Olson declined to charge her for the 15-minute filling fix — so she gifted him a pair of gold-enameled cufflinks for his trouble. The cufflinks were decorated with crowns and the letters “ER” for “Elizabeth Regina.”

From then on, Dr. Olson was nationally known as “The Queen’s Dentist.” According to the Tribune, he never accepted requests for TV interviews about his experience with the queen. But cards addressed to “The Queen’s Dentist” continued to appear in his mailbox long after her visit.

The Making of a Royal Smile In truth, Queen Elizabeth likely had a team of dentists at her beck and call over the years. Fun fact: Even though she passed away at age 96, the queen did not wear dentures. She had all of her own teeth! Queen Elizabeth’s exact dental upkeep appears to be a national secret, but Matthew Rose, an implant surgeon and restorative dentist with The Implant Center, told Express the queen likely invested in cosmetic dentistry like crowns and veneers to keep her smile white. According to The Mirror, the queen herself credited her smile to the fact that she once wore braces.

When it comes to the need for dental work, it turns out the royals are just like the rest of us!

Winter Vegetable Shepherd’s Pie Inspired by Delish.com

Ingredients • 6 1/2 cups potatoes, cut into large chunks • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 onions, sliced • 1 tbsp flour • 2 large carrots, cut into rounds • 1/2 cauliflower, broken into florets • 4 garlic cloves, sliced • 1 sprig rosemary • 15-oz can diced tomatoes plus liquid • 1/2 cup water • 1 1/2 cups frozen peas • Milk, to desired consistency

Directions 1. In a pot, boil potatoes until tender. 2. In a pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened. Stir in flour and cook for 2 minutes. Add carrots, cauliflower, garlic, and rosemary and stir until softened. 3. Pour tomatoes into mix and add water. Cover and let simmer for 10 minutes, then remove lid and cook for 15 minutes until thickened. Stir in peas and simmer. 4. Drain and mash potatoes. Stir in milk to desired consistency. 5. Preheat oven to 375 F. Spoon hot vegetable mix into pie dish, then top with mashed potatoes. Bake until top is golden brown.

How the Grinch Stole Our Hearts BEHIND THE TIMELESS CHRISTMAS TALE

As regularly as Rudolph does, the Grinch appears on our television screens every December. Despite his negative attitude and nefarious intentions, the protagonist of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” remains a family favorite more than 55 years after the animated TV special first aired. The Grinch’s transformation into a cultural icon began with a 1957 children’s book. Author Dr. Seuss had recently experienced great success with “The Cat in the Hat” and was a hot commodity. He published “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” later that same year, and the black-and-white book was an instant smash. The story might have ended there if Dr. Seuss had his way. Dr. Seuss was protective of his creations and didn’t trust them in anyone else’s hands, but his filmmaker friend, Chuck Jones, eventually persuaded him to reconsider. Still, the story required some changes. Jones assigned the Grinch his signature green color, and the Grinch’s dog, Max, was given a more prominent role to increase the special’s runtime. But the songs were the most important of all.

Mr. Grinch” is a hilariously clever song and a highlight of the program. The filmmakers also secured a big

win in the voice talents of horror movie legend Boris Karloff, who provided an alternatingly sneering and tender tone to the production.

Thanks to its full animation technique featuring 25,000 drawings, Variety says “The Grinch” may have been the most expensive television special made until that time. Later, Hollywood upped the ante with a live-action adaptation in 2000 and an animated full-length film in 2018. Both movies were box office successes, but neither has overtaken the 26-minute TV special as our favorite way to enjoy the Grinch. Why does the Grinch endure? Dr. Seuss based the character on himself, so it may be that there’s a little bit of the Grinch in all of us. Unlike that other well-known holiday-hater Ebenezer Scrooge, he gives those who aren’t full of Christmas cheer a favorable mascot. The Grinch’s wild schemes and comical complaints are more fun than menacing, and his story produces a reliably happy ending. As its greatest gift, an annual viewing can leave even the most hardened Grinch feeling as if their own heart has grown a size or two.

The TV special contains nine total musical numbers, the most famous featuring lyrics only Dr. Seuss could have written. “You’re a Mean One,
