Pernod Ricard breaks ground on China’s rst ever iconic malt whisky distillery Emeishan, China: Pernod Ricard, one of the world’s leading whisky producers, has ofcially broken ground on the site of China’s rst ever iconic malt whisky distillery, the rst distillery from an international spirits and wine group. Situated at Emeishan, Sichuan, Pernod Ricard envisions an innovative approach to malt whisky making that celebrates the natural beauty of the climate in the region, renowned for its pristine water source and natural terroir. With a potential investment of one billion RMB (150 million USD) for the next decade, the 13-hectare distillery site will boast a state-of-the-art malt whisky distillation facility, due to begin production in 2021. The Emeishan Malt Whisky Distillery will be rst in the world to appoint a Chinese master distiller, fusing authentic whisky-making craftsmanship and local knowledge to create an iconic malt whisky. The Distillery will also house an immer- sive visitor centre, scheduled to open in 2021, with the ambition of complementing the local tourism industry by becoming a new world-class destination that will attract

Grains of paradise is listed as one of the 10 botanicals used to create Bombay Sapphire. The gin is distilled at Laverstoke Mill in the UK county of Hampshire. According to the lawsuit, the act of adulter- ing alcohol with grains of paradise is illegal in Florida, and is a “felony of the third degree”. Standards for adulterated alcohol vary in the US from state to state. “When consumed, grains of paradise have been known for their warming and digestive properties,” the class action reads. “Additionally, grains of paradise has been used in other parts of the world for medicinal purposes including, without limitation, to treat impotence and to stimulate miscar- riages when a pregnancy was unwanted.” The suit accuses Bacardi of engaging in “unfair methods of competition, unconscion- able acts or practices, and unfair or deceptive acts or practices in the conduct of its trade or commerce, by adultering its Bombay Sapphire Gin with grains of paradise”. The plaintiff is seeking refunds from Bacardi, as well as payment of legal fees and “further relief as the court may deem proper and just”. The lawsuit was led with the Miami- Dade Circuit Court earlier this month. It is not yet known if the case will go to trial. Spirits Business
