AND FINALLY

Welsh brewery changes name of beers after trademark battle Swansea’s Boss Brewing was required to pay out almost £10,000, change the name of two of its beers and stop selling branded clothing following a trademark battle with designer fashion label Hugo Boss. As reported by Wales Online , Boss Brewing, which was founded in 2014, received a cease and desist letter from high-end fashion retailer Hugo Boss after applying to trademark its brand. Co-owner of the business, Sarah John, told Wales Online that Hugo Boss was “adamant they wanted to stop the name” from being trade- marked. The company told John that it owned the Boss trademark in most of the world, but that it did not own rights to it in relation to alcohol. A compromise was eventually reached, whereby Boss Brewing was required to change the name of two of its beers. Boss Black, a 5% ABV stout, has become Boss Brewing Black, and Boss Boss, a 7.4% ABV double IPA, is now Boss Bossy. The brewer is also forbidden from selling its branded clothing, which include hats and t-shirts. John added: “We’ve got pallet loads of Boss Black which we are going to have to go through and change the labels of, which will be of great expense and time for a small brewery. “This has been a horrible experience, and so stressful. We have worked so hard to create all of this and what should have been a simple process ended up making us question whether everything was going to be OK going forward in the future and whether we were going to lose everything. Boss Brewing opened its new brewery, which was 10 times larger than its rst facility, in March 2018. It now employees 25 members of staff and offers contract brewing and packaging facili- ties in addition to making its own beers. ● The Drinks Business

Lab sources brewing yeast from space

Mainiacal Yeast Labs has managed to isolate brewing yeast from an air sample collected in space by two NASA research pilots. The US company, which specialises in sourcing “unique yeast and bacteria” for home and professional brewers, recently teamed up with Lanikai Brewing Co. in Hawaii to help source space yeast for the brewer’s Interplanetary Ale, created to com- memorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. According to reports by Forbes , Lanikai

Haumschild told the publication: “I’m excited to share what I’ve found with other brewers. We didn’t know what we were going to get, and to be honest I truly didn’t think it was going to work, but in the spirit of exploration, I gured, let’s try it. That’s what NASA is about, that’s what [Lanikai Brewing] is about.” Mainiacal Yeast Labs has reportedly cultured around 3,500 different yeast strains, and before working with the ‘space yeast’, had previously isolated samples from two thousand feet in the air. ● Drinks Business Brewing Company co-founder, CEO, and brewmaster, Steve Haumschild, befriended two NASA research pilots who were able to collect yeast samples in a petri dish. Flying in a NASA ER2 plane, they were able to collect the yeast while ying at 70,000 feet from air coming through the intake vent. Justin Amaral, co-owner and head of lab services at Mainiacal Yeast then worked to isolate the yeast strains, eventually nding two different strains in the petri dish. One proved viable for brewing, though needed to be combined with another strain in order for it consume enough sugar to make good quality beer.

quiz

This month’s quiz has the theme of ‘Drinks at the Movies’ – see how many answers go you know without referring to that well- known search engine! Answers in December’s edition. Back in August we set another set of nine questions – the answers were: • Henry V was the Shakespeare hero who said “I would give all my fame for a pot of ale and safety”. • A Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is the name of the dangerously strong drink favoured by Zaphod Beeblebrox and Ford Prefect in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. • Gin is mentioned in all of: Death of a Clown by the Kinks, Honky Tonk Women by the Rolling Stones and Substitute by The Who. • Thujone (from wormwood ) is the highly toxic, t-inducing ingre- dient of absinthe that caused it to be banned in most European countries. • ‘Take me home, country roads’ (John Denver) is the 70s hit that mentions the ‘misty taste of moonshine’. • Winston Churchill said “Always remember that I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me”. • Prohibition in the USA ended in 1933. • Dorothy L Sayers came up with the slogan “Guinness is good for you”. • Ben Harper sang of “Some drink to remember, some (drink) to forget” … however The Eagles are oft misquoted as they “dance” to remember and forget, and the answer ‘ alcoholics ’ was also accepted as technically correct!

First name out of the hat … Phil Browne in Australia … who wins the bottle of London Dry Gin kindly donated by Sipsmith. Enjoy!
