“We go to bed at night and not worry about how the bills will get paid every month. Financial stability is a great reward for the work we’re putting in. AMWAY IS A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR THE MCKENNAS.
This was a turning point for Peter which convinced him to change his career and life direction and get fully involved. “At an Amway meeting, I’d met some people who had done well in the business (they weren’t very corporate types either). It dawned on me that Amway could offer us a lot, and there was potential to build a large business. With this knowledge I set a goal to earn enough so I could leave my day job in five years,” recalled Peter. Peter was 35 years old when he set this goal. Right on cue, aged 40, he quit his air traffic controller job. For the McKennas, their Amway business allowed them to spend time with their two sons during the early years of their business and now also with their grandchildren. “For our family, Amway is a success story especially because neither Helen nor I had any skills in marketing or sales when we first started,” said Peter. It’s why the McKennas believe that anyone can do well in the Amway business if they stay consistent and are determined enough. The couple believe these two factors are the driving force behind how far they’ve come.
The newest Founders Executive Diamonds in the business Helen and Peter McKenna run their business in partnership with their son Dominic and daughter-in-law Karina McKenna. Helen and Peter started their Amway business in the eighties when they were both working full time. “I was a senior teacher in a technical school and actively looking to leave teaching. Peter was working as an air traffic controller at Melbourne Airport, and we were expecting our first baby,” recalled Helen. “I remember listening to our sponsor’s presentation and later running the numbers on the business which convinced me to look further into the opportunity. I was impressed by the business plan and the people who I met. Initially, I stayed in the background while Helen ran the business because I didn’t really expect to turn the Amway business into a lifestyle or a business that would replace my air traffic control income plus our combined incomes,” explained Peter. After their first son arrived and Helen was able to focus on the business, and by the end of that year (to their surprise!), Helen was earning enough money to replace her teacher’s salary and Peter’s shift penalty income from his day job.

“When we achieved Diamond, which took us ten years, we thought we knew it all. But we learned, as most people do, that there’s a lot more to it. And it starts with having to work on yourself. The business works very well as it is, the tricky
bits are what comes after that with personal growth. However, if you stay connected to the people who have gone before you, then you’ll increase your chances of success. We were tremendously encouraged by successful people we met in Amway as we moved through our PIN levels, thereby giving us more access to them and we started to see more success,” continued Helen. “One of our biggest challenges was to force ourselves to grow our networks outside of our friends and family. We approached it by getting to know people in our neighbourhood first, without talking about the business. We still do it to this day. Get to know new people first and then if, through conversation they tell us they’re looking for more, we then share what the business can do for them,” said Peter. Technology has helped them navigate their business successfully even during the pandemic with Dominic and Karina leading the way. Dominic and Karina use all different types of digital technologies like Calendly, WhatsApp, Zoom and social media to organise their business as they raise a young family. “Our favourite Amway tool is Switch Share Duplicate. We use it during our education process and find it hugely valuable in calculating the additional income you could earn when someone switches from using supermarket drinks, snacks, nutritional supplements and beauty products to Amway brands,” they said. Some amazing insights from the McKennas and Amway wishes them continued success in their journey to even bigger achievements.
“Our two tips for IBOs to progress in the business is to learn the skills and be consistent until you get it done, which unfortunately many people struggle with,” they said.
Personal drive aside, Peter and Helen have always enjoyed meeting those people who have successfully built Amway businesses around the world. “You need to have what I call ‘a running buddy’ in this business. Someone who believes in it, is successfully building a business and can support you when things get challenging. It’s key to be able to stay for the long term,” said Peter. Over the years, the couple have experienced quite a few moments which have reinforced their belief that they’re in the right place at the right time and in the right business. An ‘aha moment’ for Helen was attending an Amway conference in Dallas many years ago. “There were 18,000 people present, including myself and some of our team who had been keen to visit the United States of America. I remember feeling the energy and buzz in the room and wanting to absorb as much of it as I could. That’s when I decided to get on board fully in the business.” From September 1st Peter and Helen integrated their business with Dominic and Karina which means building the business alongside them as a total partnership. The sky is the limit for the McKennas. Dominic recalled, “When I was 14 years old, I asked my dad about which business would be great to start. He said an Amway business won hands down. I thought he was biased at the time. However, I now truly

We had to immerse ourselves in business audios, clearing out the junk that had built up over the years in our heads from various sources and just keep our focus really clear,” admitted Helen.
“Our progress has proved hugely rewarding for us and our teams – both financially and in other areas of life. Many in our team have moved up to new levels. It’s another way we’ve solidified our business growth and moved forwards,” said Karina.

It makes them believe that if we can do it, they can too,” said Sharron. “The groundwork had been laid for us thanks to the effort we had put into the business in our earlier years. Acting and thinking like leaders to set the right example for our team and helping them develop their own leadership skills helped us reach our goal,” explained Sharron.
New Sapphires Lynn and Craig said choosing to start an Amway business remains the best financial and business decision they’ve ever made. Their business helped the couple rebuild their lives and a new home after experiencing financial losses. “We’ll be moving into our home in November 2022. Having the financial rewards make it so much easier to shop for all new furniture and taken so much stress away. We’ve managed to take ‘short break’ holidays too and sharing some of these lifestyle benefits with our family,” said Lynn. Looking back to when they started in the business, Lynn and Craig have learnt a lot.
“We’ve left our old ways of working behind and embraced being open to new learnings. We seek out our upline’s guidance to help us stay on track. We remain expectant of what’s possible for us, and never lose sight of our dreams that drive us forward,” they said. “Facebook and Messenger are an important part of our prospecting process. We stay connected daily with our teams via phone, Zoom and group chats like WhatsApp. We also use Zoom for business meetings.” “Amway’s development of online product training has been phenomenal. We’re active on the Amway website every day and attend as many online or webinar product events as possible,” said Craig.
“A key strategy is to lead the team towards the tools available for them to build their business instead of us simply giving them the tools – whether it’s how to find people to share the business with or stay updated with the latest trainings. We’ve found greater success by getting the team to use the tools for themselves because it builds their confidence in running their own businesses,” they said.

The couple believe that their business’s ability to switch so easily online drove their success faster. “From the ARTISTRY app to tools found in education modules to access to Amway’s naturopaths, it all works together seamlessly to help us continue our daily business activities online, instead of just face to face like it used to be.”

“We set our goals and held on to them. Then, we defined the actions we needed to take and took daily action towards the goal. Staying close to our upline has been vital to guide us on our strategies. We learnt everything we could about leadership and worked towards becoming better leaders,” said Lynn.
