But what you might not know is that my holistic approach to health was inspired largely by a man named Jack LaLanne. LaLanne was a pioneer in the fitness industry who performed amazing feats of physical strength and encouraged everyone to follow in his footsteps. Throughout his career as a health and fitness advocate, LaLanne achieved many things. He opened the first ever health and fitness club in Oakland, California, and spoke out vehemently against processed foods. Until he was about 15, LaLanne was a self-described “sugarholic” and “junk food junkie,” but he turned his life around after learning about the benefits of nutrition and healthy food. From his teenage years until his death in 2011, he ate a primarily vegetarian diet with fish and vitamin supplements. His commitment to this diet is an achievement in itself!

BETTER BALANCE WITH THE INTERNAL MARTIAL ART When you think about martial arts, a few images come to mind: Mr. Miyagi, possibly nunchucks, and people breaking objects using impressive disciplined strength. But one of the most powerful martial arts you may not immediately picture is tai chi. This ancient Chinese form of combat in slow motion is an internal martial art that works from the inside out by developing the body’s internal energy, known as qi, or “chi.” In Chinese medicine, balanced qi is essential to good health. Hundreds of studies demonstrate the mental and physical benefits this quiet martial art provides. Because of its focus on posture, tai chi is particularly helpful for balance. In Harvard’s analysis of 20 different studies, tai chi was shown to improve cognitive function and slow the progression of dementia more than other forms of exercise. While the movements appear mild, the practice of tai chi requires discipline and strength. That’s part of the reason why it provides a powerful punch of health benefits and also why less than 5 percent of people stick with it. This month, I want to shout out Linda Ketron, who has been as dedicated to serving her community as her spinal health. Linda has been a patient at Grand Strand Health and Wellness for over 11 years, and every day she visits the office is a good one. I met Linda at a Senior Forum event at Horry Georgetown Technical College. I had a booth set up promoting Grand Strand, and she was promoting the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) for Coastal Carolina University (CCU). She decided to stop by our booth, and the rest is history. Linda is a one-in-a-million kind of trailblazer and go-getter. She doesn’t waste time just talking about problems in our community — she gets out there and solves them! Linda finds countless ways to serve people in the bike paths of Bike the Neck, through the Friends of Waccamaw Library, or with the Moveable Feast. She sees herself as a person with lots of energy who can help anyone in any situation. “I have no special gift,” Linda said, “but I do love this community, and one of the things I have is a lot of energy. Since there’s nothing I particularly

want, why not direct the energy into what other people want?” Linda’s boundless energy belies her peaceful nature. I always feel calm and at home

when she visits the office. She exemplifies the holistic approach to health that chiropractic is all about by

committing to regular appointments, leading water aerobics classes, and investing in a treadmill desk, so she can work while staying on the move. Her commitment to consistent chiropractic care is absolute. About three years ago, Linda started a program called the Kimbel Concert Series which offers quarterly concerts featuring blues legends and beach music favorites. She loves how the care she receives through Grand Strand Health and Wellness enables her to boogie and feel the exhilaration of movement without pain or strain. In her spare time, she loves reading and weeding.

Why Tai Chi Is Cooler Than You Think

In an interview, Li explained his push to make tai chi a more widely recognized and accepted exercise: “In our attempts to push ourselves, we’ve lost sight of an important part of the sporting mindset: balance.” For anyone setting out on a mission to age gracefully, tai chi can help reduce your risk of falling with its focus on posture. An ounce of preventive tai chi may be worth a pound of cure; the Center for Disease Control reports that people pay an average of $35,000 in health care costs every time they fall. Many community centers and health and wellness facilities offer opportunities to learn tai chi, from free community classes to entire tai chi facilities. Go see for yourself why this is the martial art everyone should practice.

Grand Strand’s Employee of the Month Celebrating Jaleesa Manigault

Some businesses are lucky to have one employee who brings their A-game every day, but, at Grand Strand Health and Wellness, I have the good fortune to work with several. This month, I want to shout out Jaleesa Manigault, our line’s coordinator. She is an expert in efficiency and makes sure every patient gets the treatment and services our doctors recommend. Jaleesa is focused, determined, and courteous. Whenever she looks at a schedule, she can anticipate immediately what that day will look like and work her magic. She keeps patients moving along and the hot seat area clear of crowds. She loves our patients, and you can always hear her greeting them with kindness and one of her famous hugs as they walk through the door.

She’s constantly brainstorming with the other team members, and she doesn’t wait around to execute those plans when they’re fully formed. Her interactions with patients are no less admirable. If there’s something a patient needs, whether it’s ice or an extra minute on therapy, Jaleesa will make it happen. Patients will always receive the services they need, as well as the products recommended to them by our doctors — even if we happen to be out of stock. She makes every patient’s visit enjoyable. Jaleesa knocks every curve ball that comes her way out of the park, and even though she seemingly keeps track of a thousand things

at once, she can always say without a doubt where a certain patient is in the clinic at any given moment. She gives new meaning to the idea of controlling chaos, and I have no idea where we would be without her. Jaleesa has two beautiful daughters, Cenya and Paris, and her fiancé is David. She loves shopping, volunteering, self-improvement, and food. Her favorite color is red.

4 Stretches for Staying Limber on the Road

For Your Next Road Trip LIMBERING UP

Even though road trips offer you a break from the monotony of your office, the stiffness in your muscles and joints that comes from sitting in one position for too long can follow you onto the road if you’re not careful. Whether in front of a laptop or behind the wheel, taking the opportunity to stretch and exercise on your summer road trip is a great way to prevent the soreness from following you back to the office. Here are a few stretches to keep in mind for the next rest stop. FOR THE NECK Reach your left arm over the top of your head and touch your right ear. Then, gently pull your head to the left and hold it there for 15 seconds. Repeat this process with your right arm. FOR THE CHEST Stand in front of a door frame with one hand pressed on either side and your elbows at 90-degree angles, then lean forward. This will cause your chest muscles to open up. Hold this position for 15 seconds. You can do a similar stretch by bending downward while keeping your hands on your car door in front of you, stretching your entire upper body. FOR THE HIPS While you’re driving, a good way to prevent sore hips is by making sure your knees are slightly

elevated above them in your seat. Once you have the opportunity to stop, try doing some hip flexors. Kneel on one knee, slowly push your pelvis forward, squeeze your shoulders back, and open your chest. Hold this position for 15 seconds, then repeat while kneeling on the other knee.

FOR THE LEGS To stretch out your hamstrings, place your

right heel on a small step. Extend your arms upward, and then lean your upper body forward. You’ll feel a pull in the back of your upper leg. Once you’ve done this for about 15–30 seconds, repeat the process with your left heel. The road may be long, but that doesn’t mean you have to feel it in your muscles. If you stop every couple of hours and take some time to limber up, your body will thank you.
