THE NOURISH LETTER
Meet the Team Behind Your Meals JANUARY 2023

,
In 2020 and 2021, we experienced severe supply chain issues due to the pandemic. Many manufacturers had product issues and shortages of the single-serving containers we used for our meals. I remember how stressed out I was because I knew how much our customers loved our single-size containers — they provided the perfect amount of food each time. But because we weren’t able to purchase these containers, it forced us to find a way to streamline and optimize our entire service. So, I began making adjustments to ensure our customers could still get the delicious and nutritious meals they were used to. Since single-size containers were tough to find, at the beginning of 2022, I started using regular-size containers, which were only a little bigger than the single-size. Now, converting to different sizes isn’t as simple as it seems. There are many moving parts; changing one part means adjusting the other systems and sections. Because of this change, I was adamant about making this transition run as smoothly as possible. I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO YOU And Your Wishes Are Being Granted!
So, starting at the end of 2021, on Dec. 29, I worked 134 days straight.
I had many late nights at the beginning of 2022 to ensure everything was streamlined. First, I had to change our menu. At first, I would change our menu weekly, but I decided to start changing it monthly — we went from five entrees a week to 20 entrees a month. Next, I had to change our meals’ nutrition and recipe information. While the containers are only a little bit bigger than the single-serving size containers, the nutrition facts and the portions within the recipe changed. Then, I had to adjust the graphics on our website and update our delivery methods to adapt to the new sizes. While the transition may have looked easy, it certainly wasn’t! But the sleepless nights and long hours were worth it — everything was streamlined, and our customers still received the best service. A couple of months after this transition, I wanted to hear from all of you! Everything my team and I do is to
I’M HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE SINGLE-SIZE CONTAINERS ARE BACK IN STOCK AND ARE READILY AVAILABLE!

And Receives the Thin Blue Paw Award POLICE DOG SAVES 38 LIVES
to her community, Thin Blue Paw gave her the Lifesaver Award to commemorate her hard work. The foundation mentioned how the canine is a true inspiration and that her work deserved to be recognized. Not only was Luna excellent at finding missing people, but she also fiercely loves her handler and would do anything to protect her. When talking about Luna’s loyalty, McBride mentioned that “she has a wonderful temperament when dealing with vulnerable and high-risk people … but she still had the ability to switch when dealing with a dangerous criminal or anyone who would show violence towards her or me.”
ensure you’re getting the best service possible and enjoying your experience with us. While you all love the food and all the varieties, many of you reached out to me and voiced how most of you miss the single-size portions. The single-size containers gave each of you the perfect amount of food to settle your hunger and even have some food left over. The regular-size containers were just a little bit too much for your liking — and I completely understand and agree. I want to tend to your needs, requests and desires as much as possible, so I did some digging when I heard that most of you want the smaller containers back. I’m happy to announce that the single- size containers are back in stock and are readily available! Back in November, I began ordering these containers again, and starting this month, your favorite portion sizes will be back and ready for purchase. ... continued from Cover When we think about first responders, we typically think about humans. But dogs also play a critical role in the police force and have impacted the lives of their police force and their communities. The Scotland Central Division Police force had one of their best companions retire in June 2022: a 10-year-old German shepherd named Luna. “Luna would continue to work if the choice was hers,” said Linda McBride, Luna’s handler. Luna and McBride first became a team in 2012 when Luna was only 12 weeks old. The pair created a strong bond and always looked out for one another. Luna was an exceptional police dog who searched and tracked high-risk missing people. Over her career, Luna has successfully rescued 38 people. One of her success stories occurred in 2019. Luna was sent out to find a man who had gone missing. After capturing his scent, she put her senses to work and located the man hiding in a bush, suffering from hypothermia. If it wasn’t for her, the man may have never been found and could have died. This is only one of the many heartwarming stories of Luna and how she saved the lives of many. Because of Luna’s hard work and dedication
Luna has spent her entire life protecting her community and handler. But now it’s time for her to take a well-deserved rest. McBride mentioned that she and Luna took their first vacation to celebrate her retirement. They went to the beach and played in the sand and sun. Now, Luna can relax and focus on being a loveable furry friend. Thank you for your service, Luna! Not only have you impacted your community in Scotland but also many people in the U.S.
I had to adjust our menu, graphics, recipes, nutrition labels and delivery methods again, but I had more than enough time to complete everything. I’m still recovering from my surgery, so as my team holds down the fort at October Kitchen, I’ve been working behind the scenes and ensuring everything is good to go for them and you. Thank you for your continued support for myself and my team all these years — we wouldn’t be where we are today without our amazing customers. Thank you for your patience and feedback as well. I always want to accommodate your wishes and ensure you have the best experience at October Kitchen. My team and I look forward to what the future holds for you and for us in 2023.
Until next time,

One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight and be healthier overall. While incorporating exercise into your daily routine is one of the ways you can reach your goals,
that’s only the tip of the iceberg. What you eat plays a crucial role in your health and can help you reach your goals. One of the areas people tend to struggle with is gut health. A healthy gut is the cornerstone of a healthy body, so if your gut health is unbalanced, it can affect your metabolism, mood and digestive system.
Let’s take a look at what foods are bad for your gut health and what foods can benefit you.

Foods That Can Negatively Impact Your Gut • Fried foods: While fried chicken, country-fried steak and chicken tenders are crunchy and delicious, it’s difficult for your body to digest them. The oils used to fry the food are rich in saturated and trans fat, which can cause stomach pains and gas. • Red meat: Steak, hamburger, bacon and pork chops have a large amount of L-carnitine, which alters the bacteria in your gut. Heavy intake of red meat can impact your weight and immune function and cause inflammation. • Genetically modified organisms (GMOs): While GMOs help crops resist pests and diseases, it’s detrimental to our gut health. Like red meat, GMOs can reduce the beneficial bacteria we have in our gut. Foods That Can Positively Impact Your Gut • Whole grains: Whole grain foods are great for your gut because they provide antioxidants, minerals, magnesium and iron to your body. • Foods with inulin: Foods like asparagus, garlic, onions and artichoke have prebiotic fiber that gives your body good bacteria and other nutrients. • Organic food: Check food labels to see if they are free of pesticides, GMOs, herbicides, antibiotics and hormones. Organic food benefits your overall body and can help you feel less bloated. We are not encouraging you to cut out fried food, red meats and other foods that negatively impact your gut health altogether. Consume these foods in moderation and ensure you’re incorporating healthy and nutritious food into your meals to balance your diet. Luckily, your friends at October Kitchen have the perfect balance that will stop your stomach from growling and benefit your body. Try one of our meals today; your tastebuds and body will thank you.

VOLUNTEER TO KEEP YOUR BODY AND MIND ACTIVE! SHARING YOUR TIME CAN BECOME YOUR FAVORITE EXERCISE
heavy boxes or walking up a steep hill) to fit your abilities. So, even if you’re just beginning an exercise habit, volunteering is a perfect initial step in your fitness journey. Your brain expands. When you volunteer with others, you usually have a common goal, like feeding the community, cleaning up a park or planting a garden. Joining others to accomplish a task provides a significant brain boost, and studies show camaraderie increases positive thoughts and feelings. On top of feeling better, volunteering keeps your mind agile. By working hard to solve a problem, you’re using more neural pathways, which helps keep mental decline at bay.
Staying active is increasingly vital to our health as we age. But pain, injury or the lack of an exercise location can limit how we keep fit. But luckily, there is an easy way to have an active lifestyle without lifting weights or joining a gym: volunteer! Here are three reasons volunteering can be your new favorite exercise if you’re looking to flex some physical, mental or social “muscle.” It moves you. Volunteering offers different ways to move your body! Even small things like strolling through a park to pick up litter, navigating around a soup kitchen or directing visitors at your local donation center keep you active.
You form connections. As we mentioned earlier, when you show up to volunteer, others usually attend for the same reason. Socializing with the group can help you feel less isolated and more connected to others, and some of these people may even become friends when the job is complete. If you want to get active but don’t know of volunteer opportunities in your area, visit VolunteerMatch.org and enter your zip code to find local in-person options. Help yourself and others by making volunteer work your go-to exercise!
