One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight and be healthier overall. While incorporating exercise into your daily routine is one of the ways you can reach your goals,

that’s only the tip of the iceberg. What you eat plays a crucial role in your health and can help you reach your goals. One of the areas people tend to struggle with is gut health. A healthy gut is the cornerstone of a healthy body, so if your gut health is unbalanced, it can affect your metabolism, mood and digestive system.

Let’s take a look at what foods are bad for your gut health and what foods can benefit you.

Foods That Can Negatively Impact Your Gut • Fried foods: While fried chicken, country-fried steak and chicken tenders are crunchy and delicious, it’s difficult for your body to digest them. The oils used to fry the food are rich in saturated and trans fat, which can cause stomach pains and gas. • Red meat: Steak, hamburger, bacon and pork chops have a large amount of L-carnitine, which alters the bacteria in your gut. Heavy intake of red meat can impact your weight and immune function and cause inflammation. • Genetically modified organisms (GMOs): While GMOs help crops resist pests and diseases, it’s detrimental to our gut health. Like red meat, GMOs can reduce the beneficial bacteria we have in our gut. Foods That Can Positively Impact Your Gut • Whole grains: Whole grain foods are great for your gut because they provide antioxidants, minerals, magnesium and iron to your body. • Foods with inulin: Foods like asparagus, garlic, onions and artichoke have prebiotic fiber that gives your body good bacteria and other nutrients. • Organic food: Check food labels to see if they are free of pesticides, GMOs, herbicides, antibiotics and hormones. Organic food benefits your overall body and can help you feel less bloated. We are not encouraging you to cut out fried food, red meats and other foods that negatively impact your gut health altogether. Consume these foods in moderation and ensure you’re incorporating healthy and nutritious food into your meals to balance your diet. Luckily, your friends at October Kitchen have the perfect balance that will stop your stomach from growling and benefit your body. Try one of our meals today; your tastebuds and body will thank you.
