YU Celebrates 93rd Annual Commencement
On Wednesday, May 29, Yeshiva University, the flagship Jewish university, will honor the Class of 2024 at the 93rd Annual Commencement Ceremony at the Louis Armstrong Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens. Friends, families and alumni, along with faculty, staff and administration, will gather as over 600 students from Yeshiva College, Stern College for Women and the Sy Syms School of Business receive their degrees. Additionally, more than 1,100 graduate students in law, medicine, social work, education, Jewish studies, psychology and STEM-related disciplines will be awarded degrees throughout the commencement season. This year, U.S. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, a staunch advocate of Israel and Jewish Americans, will receive the Presidential Medallion for Distinguished Heroes of Israel. Through a series of powerful and engaging video segments, the program will highlight the unwavering efforts the University community has made in support of Israel after Oct. 7 as well as celebrate the Class of 2024 with candid and heartfelt reminiscences from students, staff and administration. The audience will also hear from our nine valedictorians and the deans of YU’s under- graduate and graduate programs. The 93rd Annual Commencement comes at a time of great significance, serving not merely as a graduation but as a profound celebration of our Jewish identity and values in action. Yom HaShoah (May 6)
Organized by the Student Holocaust Education Movement, the Office of Student Life and the Fish Center, the 2024 Yom HaShoah observance at Lamport Auditorium was a moving tribute to those who perished in the Holocaust. Hundreds from across the YU community gathered to hear firsthand about the generational impact and legacy of this tragic period in a heartfelt conversation between Claire Grunwald, a Holocaust survivor and poet, and her daughter, Chanie Handler. Dr. Erica Brown, vice provost and director of the Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks-Herenstein Center for Values and Leadership, moderated the discussion. Renowned performer Moshe Bonen led the gathering in song, reinforcing a collective spirit of remembrance and hope.
Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut (May 13 and May 14) Against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, the 2024 Yom Hazikaron observance and Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration at Lamport Auditorium held a deeper, more immediate significance. On May 13, the YU community gathered for a Tekes Ma’avar ceremony to honor Israel’s fallen soldiers and terror victims, including those recently lost in the Oct. 7 attacks, and the courageous soldiers who have since made the ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony was followed by a tefillah chagigit and a concert by Eitan Katz. Transitioning into Yom Ha’atzmaut, students gathered on the afternoon of May 14 at Tenzer Gardens on the Wilf Campus to celebrate Israel Independence Day and demonstrate their unwavering support for Israel. Dr. Rebecca Cypess Named Dean of Yeshiva College and Stern College for Women Following a competitive national search, Dr. Rebecca Cypess has been appointed the new dean of Yeshiva College and Stern College for Women, effective July 1. An accomplished and visionary educational leader, Dr. Cypess is currently the associate dean for academic affairs at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, where she is also founding co-chair of J-FAS (Rutgers Jewish Faculty, Administrators, and Staff), which combats antisemitism and anti-Israel bias on campus. will succeed Dr. Karen Bacon, who will assume the role of associate vice president for Academic Affairs. READ MORE

Parnes Clinic Launches Community Resources Event On May 5, the Parnes Clinic welcomed 60 migrant and asylum-seeking teenagers to its first Bronx Community Resources Event. Local organizations, such as Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Center for Family Life, were on hand to help attendees access key services ranging from health insurance to academic support. As the training clinic for the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Parnes offers affordable mental health services through several programs, including the Asylum Project, which provides psychological evaluations to support asylum seekers’ legal cases. Produced by Shira Levy, a Psy.D. student at Ferkauf and a Sacks-Herenstein Impact Scholar, the event underscores the Parnes Clinic’s commitment to the Bronx community.
New Nursing Degree from Katz The Katz School of Science and Health is excited to launch its new accelerated B.S. in Nursing program, designed to meet the critical demand for qualified nurses in the tristate area and beyond. The 16-month program is specifically tailored for individ- uals holding non-nursing bachelor’s degrees who are eager to quickly transition into the nursing profession. Applications for the Fall 2024 semester are now being accepted. A Historic Win for YU Athletics On April 21, Yeshiva University’s roller hockey team captured its first national title by defeating Hofstra, 5-4, in the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association’s Division III championship game held in Auburn, Maine. It marked not only the team’s first national title but also represented the first national championship in the history of Yeshiva Athletics. Meet YU’s 2024 Valedictorians Nine undergraduate students were named valedictorians in 2024. These impressive young men and women not only made their mark as scholars but also have actively contributed to campus life, from serving as the senior class rep for the Yeshiva Student Union to tutoring at the Writing Center to being head counselor at YU’s Counterpoint Israel summer program. Their hometowns are as diverse as their interests, ranging from Bergenfield, New Jersey, and Houston, Texas, to Milan, Italy, and Cape Town, South Africa. READ MORE
