Keeping In Touch (KIT) Days A woman is entitled to perform up to a maximum of 10 days’ work during her Maternity Allowance Period (MAP) without losing any Maternity Allowance (MA). KIT days are intended to help women to keep in touch with her workplace and ease the transition back into work, e.g. to allow for training. Any such work must be agreed both by the woman and the employer. Where a woman comes into work for more than ten days during her MAP she is responsible for telling DWP so that her MA can be reduced by one week for each day worked in an MA week. MATERNITY GRANT A contributory benefit lump sum based on either the woman’s own, or her husband’s, contributory NICs record. Payable initially, to women who gave birth before 4th July 1982, towards initial expenditure. From 5th July 1982 to 5th April 1987 the grant was available as a non-contributory benefit subject to a test of presence in Great Britain. The Maternity Grant became officially known as The Sure Start Maternity Grant in 1999, and was available at the applicable rate for each child expected, born, adopted or the subject of a parental order on, or after, the date shown in the table below. From babies due, adopted or born on, or after 11 April 2011 the £500 grant is only available if there are no other children in the household under the age of 16 or a dependent child is under age 20 when she has a first baby. The grant is payable to those in receipt of specific state benefits: • Income Support • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance • income-related Employment and Support Allowance • Pension Credit • Child Tax Credit at a rate higher than the family element • Working Tax Credit where a disability or severe disability element is included in the award, or • Universal Credit. The grant is not means-tested and may be claimed at any time from the 29th week of pregnancy until the child is three months old. If adopting a baby the grant must be claimed within three months of adoption, and the baby should be no more than 12 months old. Where a parental order has been granted the claim must be made within three months of the date of the parental order. No printi g, copying or reproduction permitted.
