INCOME SUPPORT Introduced on 11th April 1988 as a non-contributory, taxable and means-tested benefit and replaced from October 1996 by Jobseeker’s Allowance for unemployed people. It is now generally only available to pensioners, lone parents, disabled people and (from April 2004) 19 year olds completing an approved training course. Income Support is available to those who are: • in Great Britain • aged 16 or over • not working 16 or more hours per week • have less money coming in than the established minimum to live on.
