Benchmarking (CONT’D FROM PAGE 26)

BCN: What does the future look like? If a converter has not already installed a digital press, are they too late? Wettersten: It’s never too late to participate. And participa- tion can mean several things, either direct investment in the technology or sourcing digitally printed product from a digital producer. Change can be difficult, and markets, at all levels typically view change pragmatically, and corru- gated packaging is no exception. The corrugated industry is conditioned to view success relative to the total volume produced, or in the case of technology, the number of units installed. The Benchmarking report shows the installed base is increasing (technology access), available capacity is increasing, and output is increasing. We are frequently asked, ‘When does digital printing reach a tipping point?’ The question is impossible to answer but based on what we have seen and experienced in other digital markets, there are signs that we are getting closer. BCN: How many converters, or what percentage of the installed capacity, is moving beyond optimizing print cost to optimizing total cost? Wettersten: This move demonstrates collaboration be- tween the converter and their customer. It also begins to create true competitive differentiation. Today, we see only a handful in this transition. BCN: Are workflows being developed to optimize cost? Wettersten: Lead times in packaging can range from months for something new to weeks for repeat orders. Packaging suppliers also place a host of upcharges or ‘rules’ on packaging buyers, and justifiably so to protect margins. What happens when months or weeks moves to days or hours, and there is no/little penalty for speed and flexibility? Speed, flexibility and convenience have dramat- ically transformed other industrial digital markets, how will it transform the corrugated market? Visit www.Karstedt.com or call (716)-992-2017.
