We are always told to never judge a book by its cover, and this motorcycle club proves the saying is true! Solid Ones Motorcycle Club isn’t at all what you think. It’s a group of local bikers who have continually given back to their community for almost a decade. The Polka City biker gang/nonprofit has hosted annual car washes for nearly 10 years and used the proceeds to buy new bicycles for local children’s hospitals. Solid Ones member Jordy Cooney shared with WeAreIowa, “We’re not all big and bad; some of us have really big hearts. We really like to give back to the community and give children the opportunity that some of them might not have.” Except this year, they decided to support a new cause. The club planned to proceed as usual with the 2023 fundraiser until they heard about a local family in desperate need. Breia Lastovka, who is only 6 years old, was recently diagnosed with Alström syndrome, a rare genetic disorder causing her to slowly lose her vision and hearing. Breia has already lost most of her sight and uses a cane when walking. Breia’s mother, Alyssa, has confirmed that Breia will eventually become blind and may even experience other health issues that could affect her heart, liver, and kidneys. Yet her family ensures Breia never loses hope. Her father, Sean, told KCCI, “We try to tell her every day, you know, she can do whatever she wants. The world is hers.” When Solid Ones heard about the Lastovka family’s story, they knew what they needed to do. They dedicated their fundraiser to Breia and her family with all of the funds going to help Breia travel the U.S. and see as much of the country as she can before she completely loses her eyesight. “The number of people who have come together and want to make my girl’s dreams come true is incredible,” Alyssa said. Now, the family hopes they can raise awareness for those who are visually impaired and support their daughter as best they can.
