ELEVATOR PITCH Colorifix is a UK-based biotech that has developed an entirely biological process to produce, deposit and fix pigments onto textiles. THE PROBLEM Industrial textile dyeing consumes massive amounts of water and energy and has an enormous carbon footprint. Additionally, it is one of the most chemically intensive industries on earth and one of the largest polluters of increasingly scarce freshwater. Though an exact figure is difficult to determine, it is estimated that 20% of industrial water pollution comes from textile dyeing and treatment. The majority of the textile industry worldwide uses azo dyes that are derived from petrochemicals. Many of these synthetic dyes are highly toxic and around 200,000 tons are lost annually to wastewater, flowing into rivers and streams, and causing devastating effects to the natural environment and human health.

THE SOLUTION Colorifix has developed an entirely biological process to produce, deposit and fix pigments onto textiles. Fusing advanced technology and age-old processes from nature it offers the most scalable, environmentally friendly, alternative to traditional dyeing technologies. The Colorifix solution cuts out all harmful chemicals and significantly reduces consumption of water and energy, whilst still meeting key industry standards on quality. The first step in the Colorifix process is to identify a pigment produced by a plant, animal, insect, or microbe. Via DNA sequencing, we pinpoint the genetic information that codes for the production of our chosen colour. We then translate that message into our engineered microorganism, which we use to grow, transfer, and fix colour onto textiles. Fashion brands such as H&M, Pangaia and Vollebak have launched garments dyed with the Colorifix technology.
