OPERATOR PERSPECTIVE
We’re also seeing interesting shifts in the employment market, not least having four generations simultaneously in the workforce for the first time in history: Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z. That’s bringing very diverse demands onto employers, from older employees who want better pension contributions to a younger generation with high expectations around pay and promotions – without the experience. We’re having to do so much training in things like soft skills, for example. We’ve realised we need to understand these shifts if we’re to recruit and retain a great team, though, so I’m currently focused on a research project into what motivates people and how they want to work. Are we going to have to shift to a freelance or part-time model, for example, and what does that mean for the viability of our CPD programme and career development? What else is happening at Ten? In 2019, with a growth agenda in mind, we took on investment from venture capital fund Foresight. Then along came COVID in March 2020. The clinical side of our business was deemed essential and allowed to stay open – that brought its own challenges, with half of our team on furlough and the other half still having to work – and elsewhere we pivoted to online.
There simply aren’t enough people in central London to fill all the jobs that need filling. It makes it very hard to have a stable business.
