melody that has been stuck in his head ever since. Over the course of 12 or 13 years, Rama has been trying to create a song out of this melody until he came up with the idea, in August 2015, of turning it into a rock opera. He teamed up with Kennedy in 2016, got the green light from RAPA and the two have been working on it ever since. The play evolves around a father and son who are given the chance to reconnect while putting together a musical number to pay tri- bute to their late wife and mother, Ella. Over 20 musicians, who make up a rock choir, a pit band and an on-stage band, are taking part in the production, along with a dance crew led by choreographer Julia Gutsig, five actors and another 20 or so crew members. Kennedy serves as the director, while Rama is the musical director and Sandra McNeill is the producer. “There’s been a lot of changes, a lot of discovery. The script has evolved drastically since the first cut,” said Rama. “The collabo- ration with the actors has led to some really great things that weren’t there initially.” The music and the script of Ella’s Lounge has been constantly changing and improving during rehearsal. With two weeks until the curtain draws, Rama still has one song left to write. “It’s going to be a race to the finish line,” he said.

The Russell Association for the Performing Arts (RAPA) will be showca- sing its first original production, entitled Ella’s Lounge, a Rock Opera, from April 18 to the 21. Ella’s Lounge, a Rock Opera , was co- created by local actor and musician Dave Rama, and local actor, director and teacher Kevin Kennedy. The production will be on stage at Russell High School on the nights of Wednesday, April 18 until Saturday, April 22. Tickets are already on sale and can be purchased online or at Foodland and Pronto in Russell, and at Village Bakery and Tuque de Broue Brewery in Embrun. Rama created most of the music for the production, with the help of several collaborators, while Kennedy was the main scriptwriter. The pair has previously worked on other RAPA plays over the years and are both members of its board. “It takes the whole board to give the go ahead,” said Rama. “They extended a lot of trust in us, they’ve extended budget to do this on what is an unknown commodity for them. This is a complete unknown; it’s never been done before.” The idea for Ella’s Lounge goes back almost 15 years, when Rama composed a
