A Car Accident Is Not a Winning Hand in Vegas! Growing Together With You

We’ve all seen the highway billboards advertising personal injury law firms: “My attorney won me $800,000!” or “I won $1.5 million for my client!” That sounds great. But let’s hear the whole story. Was that actually a $5 million case the lawyer settled for $1.5 million? Or did they win $10 million for a client who was paralyzed in an accident and actually deserved $100 million? I want to hear the whole story. Did you really do such a great job there? If an attorney’s billboard or website is all about “me, me, me,” what about the client? What did you do for your client? Some lawyers promote seven-figure personal injury (PI) settlements as if their client won the lottery. This leads people to imagine they’re going to be enriched beyond their wildest dreams because they were rear-ended on the road. But a car accident is not a winning hand in Vegas! In my experience, no one who receives a $1 million personal injury settlement has ever been happy about it — because to win $1 million, something really bad had to happen to them. I have never had a PI client who said, “Oh, this is awesome! I’m getting

$1 million!” They have all said, “I would rather have my health back,” or, “I would rather have my leg back.” Or “I would rather have my child back.” So, when you see those flashy billboards, think about it this way: Something was taken from that person. Perhaps it was work hours. Maybe they will suffer pain for the rest of their lives. Maybe they’re facing sky-high medical bills or the loss of a wrecked car. A truly helpful PI attorney will devote the time and attention required to understand exactly what was taken from the victim. One of the hardest things for me about this is empathizing with my clients’ losses and not being able to undo them. If they have lost a loved one, I can’t bring that person back. One of my clients lost his leg after a car hit him while he was riding his motorcycle. I can never replace his leg. As your attorney, I can’t fix a broken bone. I can’t heal your injury. You don’t want me giving you chiropractic treatment. And you definitely don’t want me in surgery with you! But what I can do for you is listen, hear your story, and truly understand what you have lost. Then, I can tell the jury your story and win compensation that fairly reflects your losses.

Is this stressful? Yes. Is it enjoyable for me to meet somebody who was just crushed in a car accident? No. It’s horrifying.

Happy with our service? We’d love to hear from you! We are always honored when our clients and associates refer their friends, family, and colleagues our way — or simply say kind things about our firm. If there is anything we can do for you, please let us know. We’re here to help!

But that’s when I come alive. I want to get that person justice. I want to win compensation that will make their life easier — that will empower them to say, “I went through something really, really bad. But I’m still here. I’m still standing. Life threw me a curveball, but I’m going to get back in the box and swing again.” To me, that’s more important than plastering a seven-figure settlement all over a billboard. Continued on Page 3 ...

Carmen Makes the Guinness Book of World Records! Biker Pride

I’ve never met a biker I didn’t like.

In recognition of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, I want to remember the great effort invested by our area Support Bikers group in participating in the longest full-game poker run by motorcycle ever completed. As a co-sponsor of this undertaking, we just received our certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records honoring their 3,427-mile trek from Port Charlotte, Florida, to Sturgis, South Dakota, in the summer of 2021. This group of 113 motorcyclists came from all over the United States. Their journey started at a Harley-Davidson dealership in Florida. They passed through 11 states during their eight-day, seven-night journey, stopping multiple times along the way to play poker. After riding through rain, sleet, and high heat and passing a few funnel clouds, the bikers reached a 600-acre campground at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally just in time for a 10-day music festival. Support Bikers contributes the money they raise to a $30.5 million fund to support riders who have been injured.

various kinds. Even then, I knew I had no chance to be named the World’s Tallest Man. But thanks to our biker community, I was able to help set a new world record! Our family flew out to honor the Poker Run arrivals. While there, I had the opportunity at the airport to meet then-Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota, who has since been named U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security. We enjoy opportunities like this one to support our biker clients. These riders all share a passion for riding and seeing the country on two wheels. They know motorcycles can be dangerous, but they see riding as therapeutic and worth the risk. We have been helping bikers injured in accidents for years. The Wisdom of Kids

Life Lessons From Little Voices

PI lawyers are also seen as ambulance chasers. Do we really chase ambulances? No. But honestly, no other PI attorney I know wants to be your friend or waste time on you until you are injured. That is what makes us different. Our clients say they appreciate that we listen to them, build a relationship, and remain their friends after the case is over, in good times and bad. We will not only handle their PI cases; we will help with consumer injury and bankruptcy cases and writing an estate plan. No matter your reason for coming to us, we are here to help. And before you dream about a jury awarding you $1 million, imagine the pain and suffering you must go through first. Whom do you want to be there beside you? Do you want the guy in the fancy suit on the billboard who is all about himself? The firm that asks you to sign representation papers without even meeting your lawyer? Or the guy who is in the trenches, answering your phone calls and emails on a daily basis?

It is often said that we adults can learn a lot by listening to our kids.

In recognition of May 6 as National Teacher Day, I’m recalling a day years ago when my 6-year-old daughter became my best teacher. Alyssa came to me before school one day and said, “Dad, can I have $5?” It was a special day at school, she said, and each child was to bring $5 to pay for lunch. The smallest bill I had was $10. Thinking I would teach her a lesson in responsibility, I told her, “I’m going to give you a $10 bill, and you bring me back $5 tonight.” I added, “This is very important. You can’t lose the money. You have to be responsible and bring me the change.” Alyssa agreed. At dinner that evening, I asked everyone how their day was. Alyssa said she had a good time sitting with friends at lunch. It didn’t dawn on me until later that she hadn’t mentioned the $5. “Honey,” I said, “do you remember this morning when I gave you $10? You haven’t given me the $5 in change back. We had a long talk about being responsible. Do you have the $5?”

Give us a call today. We would be happy to treat you with the compassion and care you deserve.

“No,” she said.

I reproached her and launched into a lecture. She listened and listened, then tried to break in. “Wait!” I told her. “I’m not done!” When I finally finished talking, I asked, “Do you understand everything I just said?”

“Yes,” she replied.

“Do you want to tell me what happened to the $5?”

“Dad, I’ve been trying to tell you!” she said. “I got in line to go to lunch, and I noticed my friend wasn’t in line. I asked her if everything was okay,” Alyssa said. “She said she was sad because she forgot her $5. So, I asked myself, ‘What would Jesus do?’ And I gave her the $5,” she said. “Was that okay, Dad?” My face went completely blank. My wife Marjorie, sitting nearby, was loving this. “You do know she was trying to tell you the whole time?” she asked, laughing. I gave Alyssa a huge hug and said, “Honey, that was perfect. I’m sorry I gave you that whole talk on responsibility.” Even at age 6, Alyssa, who is now in medical school, was clearly operating on a much higher plane than I was.

And she still is.

Criminal Mastermind? Not Quite Woman Arrested After K9 Sniffs Out Her ‘Innocent’ Tote Bag There are bad decisions, and then there are “Florida man” bad

What makes this situation even more ridiculous is that

decisions. And right at the top of that list is walking around with a bag that literally announces your crime in bold letters. That’s exactly what 31-year-old Teryn Acri did when she was caught with a tote bag that read, “ Definitely Not a Bag Full of Drugs ” — which, naturally, was full of drugs. You can’t make this stuff up. Acri’s latest brush with the law happened when the car she was riding in got pulled over by deputies in Brevard County. The driver, clearly possessing a stellar decision-making record, assured the officer that “nothing illegal should be inside.” Unfortunately for her, Aurora, the department’s drug-sniffing K9, had other ideas. When the deputy searched the vehicle, Acri’s ironically labeled tote bag was sitting there like a neon sign screaming, “CHECK ME IMMEDIATELY.” Inside? Allegedly, police found meth, needles, Narcan, digital scales, small baggies, cut straws — pretty much everything except what you would usually find in someone’s bag.

this isn’t even Acri’s first run-in with the law this year. She was arrested on Jan. 6 for — you guessed it — drug trafficking. But after making her $15,500 bond just two days later, she was out and about, making more exceptionally bad life choices. Now, she’s back behind bars, and something tells us she won’t be meeting bail this time.

If irony were a crime, Acri would be serving a life sentence. Carrying drugs is bad enough, but labeling them like a cartoon villain? That’s next-level absurdity. The universe has a sense of humor, but so does law enforcement, and they love an easy arrest. If nothing else, let this be a PSA: If your bag screams, “I’m guilty,” expect to be treated accordingly.
