My Wife Wants This for Mother’s Day The Simplicity Might Surprise You!

When I get home from work, my son Quentin is always happy to see me. His eyes open wide with excitement, and he smiles so big that I can see all of his toothless gums. It’s adorable! There’s no better feeling than swooping him up into my arms after a long day apart. But as great as my welcome reception from the little guy is, it’s nothing compared to how excited he gets when he sees his mom. If Lucero is out of Quentin’s sight for even an hour, he greets her like she’s been gone for a month. She’ll finish up a workout and come back into the room to find him smiling, giggling, and flailing his arms at her from his high chair. He even points his tiny finger in her direction like he’s saying, “That’s her! That’s my mom!”

have a beautiful and special bond. I’m sure it helps that they spend a lot of time together, but I think there’s also something magical about the relationship moms have with their kids.

Our dog, Heisenberg, loves this phase, but I’ve of course learned to cope with it. Fortunately, Lucero takes it a step farther and turns every outburst into a learning opportunity. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard her say, “Quentin, la comida va en la boca!” (Meaning, the food goes in your mouth!) I respect and admire my wife more and more every day, and I can’t wait to celebrate her on Mother’s Day this month. She does so much for Quentin and I — the least we can do is treat her to brunch. When I asked Lucero how she’d like to spend Mother’s Day, she said, “It doesn’t matter what we do. I just want to be with my boys.” It was a great reminder for me that every day we have with our son and each other is precious. It sounds cliche, but there’s nothing more important than spending time with our loved ones and treasuring those moments. Lucero is amazing at being truly present with Quentin, and I’m trying to be more like her. Working in estate planning has taught me that life is short. We only get a limited number of days — and an even more limited number of Mother’s Days. Let’s make them count.

“When I asked Lucero how she’d like to spend Mother’s Day, she said, ‘It doesn’t matter what we do. I just want to be with my boys.’”

I’m consistently amazed by how much work Lucero puts into teaching Quentin (he can sign for “milk,” “food,” “all done,” and “more” now!), talking to him, making him laugh, doing parenting research, and picking up on his quirks. Even more incredible, she does all of that on top of working for the law firm. I don’t know how she manages it. Recently, I’ve been particularly impressed by Lucero’s patience. Every parent needs that trait, but Lucero is endlessly calm and nurturing with Quentin — even when he’s acting out. Right now, he likes to throw food on the ground because he thinks it’s funny! I swear he knows exactly what he’s doing.

I could watch that scene 1,000 times and never get tired of it. Lucero and Quentin

Did You Know?

How to Choose the Right Health Care Agent

One Russian supermom from the 1700s had a whopping 69 kids. Yes, you read that correctly! According to Guinness World Records, a single amazing woman named Mrs. Vassilyev gave birth to almost 70 children. She was pregnant 27 times and delivered 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets. As Guinness puts it, “That’s a lot of Mother’s Day cards.” The supermom’s first name is lost to history, but she was married to Feodor Vassilyev, a poor Russian man who lived from 1707 to 1782. If their children stayed in their hometown of Shuya, a good chunk of the city’s population is probably related to them today. Surprisingly, Mrs. Vassilyev doesn’t hold the record for the mom with the most triplets. That crown goes to an Italian woman named Maddalena Granata. Between 1839 and 1886, she delivered a mind-boggling 15 sets of triplets. That’s 45 kids total! Imagine changing all of those diapers and surviving that many years of terrible twos. We really don’t deserve moms.

This Decision Could Save Your Life!

Life flies by so quickly that it can be difficult to focus on today, let alone plan for tomorrow! That’s why many people put off estate planning. However, it’s more urgent than you think. Much of estate planning focuses on what will happen to your assets when you die, but other elements, like Advanced Health Care Directives, dictate what can happen while you are still alive. WHAT IS AN ADVANCED HEALTH CARE DIRECTIVE? These directives establish a health care agent who will be responsible for making medical decisions on your behalf when you are otherwise unable to do so yourself. If you were to fall into a coma or suffer injuries that prevent you from making health care decisions, your health care agent would have the power to sign medical forms and make decisions about the care you will (or won’t) receive. This power includes having the ability to “pull the plug” if you are being kept alive by medical machinery. YOU MUST CHOOSE THE RIGHT PERSON. Your health care agent can literally decide whether you live or die, so it’s vital to choose the right person for the role. The person you choose must be equipped to make the right decisions for you and your family. Someone who is overly emotional and will struggle with a decision like “pulling the plug” may not be the most qualified choice. You should look for someone who can be an effective advocate for you in the health care system, which takes persistence and dedication. A loved one who works in the medical field will be your best choice. They have a better understanding of the medical challenges you are facing and can be realistic about your chances of recovery (or lack thereof). OUR TEAM CAN HELP YOU CHOOSE. At The Law Offices of Tyler Q. Dahl, we don’t just want to focus on the “what” of your estate planning documents but also the “who.” We want to get to know you and your family so that we can advise you on the right decisions. If you have questions about establishing your health care agent or Advanced Health Care Directive — or know someone who does — reach out to our office for careful and compassionate legal guidance.

4 Ways to Protect Yourself From Business Lawsuits Keep Corporate Veil-Piercing at Bay

Business owners need to take legal steps to protect themselves from being held personally liable for the debts and actions of their business. Forming a corporation or limited liability company (LLC) is a great place to start, but it doesn’t always stop creditors from “Piercing the Corporate Veil” to pursue legal action. To avoid litigious issues that put you personally in the crosshairs, take these four steps. 1. AVOID COMMINGLING FUNDS. You should never take money out of company accounts for personal use nor put money in unless specific circumstances are present. For example, if you put personal money into your business, it should be done as an additional capital contribution that results in an additional ownership stake in the business or as a loan. If you take money out, it must be in the form of a paycheck or through a shareholder or owner distribution. 2. CONDUCT ACTUAL BUSINESS ACCORDING TO LAWS AND REGULATIONS. You must keep up with the necessary laws and regulations throughout the life of your business. For example, state law requires shareholders and directors to hold at least one

annual meeting and convene on any major decisions such as large purchases, sales, investing, and borrowing. This is just one of many rules you must follow. 3. CAPITALIZE YOUR BUSINESS SUFFICIENTLY. You must start new business ventures with the necessary capital to operate them. A failure to contribute enough capital to cover reasonably expected expenses and liabilities during those first months will indicate to the court that there was never an actual plan to operate the business. 4. SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM A SINGLE-MEMBER LLC. An LLC with one owner (or married owners) is considered a “disregarded entity” by the IRS, so you need to properly establish your single-member LLC. If you are a married couple, choose the taxation of your LLC wisely to avoid personal liability. If your single-member LLC is facing significant liability, issue a small equity interest to a close friend or family member to shift the LLC to a multi-member LLC. Avoiding personal liability is one of the key benefits of incorporating your business. If you need help navigating these matters, we’re here for you.

Anxiety CAN Be Overcome

The World Isn’t Ending 3 Strategies to Reduce Anxiety

FACE ANXIETY HEAD-ON Many people try to avoid anything that could make them feel anxious. While this method may make you feel short- term comfort, it can cause you to be more anxious about specific scenarios. The best strategy to overcome anxiety is to face it head-on. Although it will be uncomfortable and challenging, don’t let it stop you! The more you put yourself out there, the less anxious you’ll feel. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for! Please contact your health care provider if you’re worried about the anxious feelings you get. They can assist you with identifying your triggers, why anxiety is occurring, and methods you can use to reduce your symptoms.

When most people think of anxiety, they likely have negative connotations tied to it. Many make the assumption that anxiety will always lead to panic attacks and fears of major change, but just about anything can generate feelings of anxiety, and not all of them are harmful. However, if your anxiety stops you from doing something, it can hinder you almost every day. In honor of May being National Anxiety Month, here are three ways to reduce your anxiety. DAILY EXERCISE Physical activity can increase your self- confidence, improve your mood, help you relax, and lower anxiety symptoms. You don’t have to do anything significant

— you can go for a walk, take a hike, conduct at-home workouts, go to the gym for at least 30 minutes, or participate in yoga and Pilates. MEDITATE Sometimes, taking a step back, focusing on your breathing, and letting your thoughts flow in one ear and out the other can help you put things in perspective. JAMA Internal Medicine published an article stating that practicing mindfulness can help ease feelings of anxiety, depression, and pain. You can meditate by following a guided meditation or silently sitting in a quiet area and breathing slowly. While meditating will be challenging at first, it will become easier with practice.
