Bonds for Israel <£ As in other American cities through out our land, quite a stir among the Jewish people in Los Angeles was caused by the visit of Moshe Sharett, Minister of Foreign Affairs for the State of Israel. The purpose of this visit was to aid in the raising of a $500,000,000.00 bond issue for the new Palestinian state. It is estimated that Los Angeles citizens purchased more than $5,000,000.00. This money will go into the continued re habilitation of the new Israeli state, which is proceeding quite according to prophecy. The Scripture has for centuries fore told the return of the Jews to their own land immediately preceding the launch ing of that chain of events which will not conclude until the Lord Jesus Christ sits upon the world’s throne and rules and reigns from Jerusalem. 100% Increase According to the manager of a local Sears store, the increase in shoplifting by juveniles has risen 1,000% in ten years, blame for this belonging to the parents’ failure to discipline their of fending youngsters, according to Joe Brannen. He complained that parents are dropping their children off at Sun day school on their way to play golf and his suggestion was that the applica tion of the razor strap would do more good than all the methods of modern psychology in preventing petty thefts. With this remedy the ancient book of Proverbs is in complete agreement pointing out that only those that hate their children withhold the rod, and that while perverseness is bound up in the heart of a child, it can be driven from him by the proper disciplinary measures. Total Incomes Up *5* Total consumers’ incomes moved up to a record high in recent months, ac cording to the Commerce Department which reported that over-all incomes achieved an annual rate of nearly 260 billions of dollars. These figures include items such as wages, pension payments, rentals, dividends and interest on stocks and bonds. Concurrent with this is a recent figure which pointed out that gifts given to all kinds of Christian work in this country from foreign mis sions to janitors’ salaries, totalled just a little over 1 billion. In other words, the per capita giving of the average United States citizen is a little more than % of 1% to all forms of the Lord’s work. In contrast to this low figure, the government of our land allows an annual contribution of 15% to all forms of religious and charitable enterprises. eminent student of that poet has re ported that he could find in Shakespeare no quotations from any other source ex cept the Bible, but that he had found 750 quotations from the Bible or refer ences to Bible incidents and teachings. He added to this that he was still searching and expecting to find 1,000 before he finished. All of which indi cates that the Bible is the fountainhead of the wealth of the world’s wisdom. Eden Blooms Again •£ If the plan of American experts suc ceeds in demonstrating that ancient lands can be desalted, the Garden of Eden may bloom again as in the time of Adam and Eve. There is a movement to restore the fertility to the dry areas of Iraq which is the region believed to be the original site of the Garden of Eden. According to the opinion of the experts, from 3,000,000 to 7,000,000 acres of this Near East Country can again be transformed into a garden. Entire villages are to be laid out and built. Roads are to be con structed. Irrigation and drainage ditches are to be dug. And along with this, there will be a huge re-settlement of people in the land. Bible students will remember that according to the 18th chapter of Rev elation many interpreters believe that literal cities are to be rebuilt and the country restored and become the center of the world’s commerce. It will be interesting to watch future develop ments. Increased Enrollments <£* Attaining an all - time high, both Protestant and Catholic elementary schools have posted their enrollments during the past year. In the last 15 years, enrollments of the nation’s 3,000 Protestant schools have jumped 61% to a total of 186,000 pupils, while Catholic enrollments are up 35% to an enroll ment of more than 3,000,000 pupils. The leading Protestant group is the Mis souri Lutheran Synod, with 1,200 schools and 100,000 students. While the Catholic growth is not sur prising, when one remembers the tre mendous pressure that the world-wide Catholic Church is focusing on all sorts of Catholic institutions in this country, the encouraging note is that Protestants are finally awaking to the tremendous value of elementary training. Bible Stamps The post office department has tenta tively decided to issue a commemorative stamp in honor of the 500th anniver sary of the printing of the Gutenberg Bible. The day set is Sept. 30th which is also the day when the new revised standard version of the Bible will be presented to President Truman in a ceremony attended by leaders of major Protestant denominations. the Unknown Soldier and the Memorial Amphitheatre of Arlington National Cemetery. Nearly every week persons wearing shorts are ordered to leave these honored places by the civilian guards who pace back and forth in front of these national shrines. The authority for this is a special order stating that it shall be the duty of the guards to prevent any disrespect or desecration to the tomb. Those who are truly loyal Americans should blush with shame that any of our citizens should be so thoughtless and without proper respect as to dis play themselves at these or any other public place with such a disregard for modesty. Coupled with this is another unmis takable tendency on the part of church goers to attend the worship services without proper dress. This is an affront to God’s holiness and a mark of the lack of proper understanding of decency and propriety. Big Business in Japan <5* The question of money versus morals is currently dividing Japan. At stake is the future of one of the nation’s biggest dollar-earning industries — prostitution. There are some 80,000 women involved whose earnings average $2,500.00 a year or seven times that of the average worker. While civic and parental groups are up in arms against this frightful situa tion, the black-marketeers and the mon ey interests are winking at the whole situation because of its vast profits. Complicating the entire picture is the presence of great numbers of American soldiers who, according to reports, are shamefully involved in this entire de plorable situation. Shakespeare Quotes <£ One of the remarkable things about the writings of William Shakespeare is the lack of quotations from other liter ary works and also the amazing num ber of quotations from the Bible.
