King's Business - 1952-08

when God gave him a promise, which was as a light shining through the knot of disappointment, changing it into a star of hope. We read, “ I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his king dom. He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever” (1 Chron. 17:11,12). God often changes the knots of dis appointment into stars of promise for Christians today. Sept. 14, 1952 N ot a K not Objects: A piece o f thin white paper 1(4 x 11 inches, and a flashlight. Lesson: David was a great king. One day he was sitting in his house and the thought occurred to him that he was living in a house of cedars, while the ark of God was kept in a tent. There was a desire in his heart to provide a nice house fo r the worship of God. David told his desire to the prophet Nathan, who thought it was a good idea and told David to go ahead and build the building.

Objects: Two drinking glasses and a lead pencil. (One glass must be cracked, so as to give a false note when tapped.) Lesson: Did you know that glasses could be like people? These glasses look alike, but they are far from being the same. One is false and the other true. As I tap them with this pencil, see if you can tell which is false. Yes, this one does not ring true. It is cracked. The other has a clear tone. You do not have to talk long with a boy or girl until you And out whether or not he or she rings true. In the Bible there are many people mentioned who ring true like this one glass. There was a time in the life of David when, because o f a great plague, he needed to make an offering unto the Lord. He was told just where to go to make the offering. When he arrived at the appointed place, the man who owned the piece of land, offered it to David, together with oxen for a burnt sacri fice. David’s reply is very interesting. We read, “ And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it o f thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver” (2 Sam. 24:24). David was like this glass with the true tone; he was true even when it cost him something. This glass with the false note re minds me o f other Scriptures. “ He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteous ness: but a false witness deceit” (Prov. 12:17). And again, we read, “ Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight” (Prov. 1 2 :2 2 ).

We will let this narrow piece of paper represent the plan David had for the temple of God. Soon the plan was inter rupted, for we read, “ And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in” (1 Chron. 17 :3 ,4 ). Naturally, this was a great disap pointment to David. It was as if a knot had been tied in his plans. I will take this narrow piece of paper and tie a knot in it. (Tie a knot nearest the end held in the left hand. Fold the paper once along the full length, and do not wrinkle the paper. When the knot is made, the right end will be a little more than a right angle to the left. Fold the right end back over the knot with the top edge meeting the top edge of the left end where the left end and the edge of the knot meet.) Just as this paper seems to be spoiled by this knot, so the plans of king David seemed to be spoiled by his being for bidden to build a beautiful temple. I am going to place this flashlight back o f the knot, and let you see what has happened. Instead of the knot we see a five-pointed star. David’s disappointment was lessened
