Objects: A large envelope and a piece of white paper. (Cut the ends off the envelope, leaving a sleeve. In the middle of the sleeve, cut a hole about an inch square through one thickness o f the paper. On the paper showing through this hole, print the word, “ IF .” To the left of the hole, on the front, print the letter “ L.” To the right of the hole, print the letter “ E,” com pleting the word “ LIFE.” Make hori zontal slits above along one side and below the letters “ L” and “ E,” in order that they may be folded backwards. With the white paper, make an insert wide enough to fill the sleeve, and long enough to extend about 3 inches above and below the sleeve. A rectangular opening will need to be cut at the cen ter, allowing the “ IF ” to show. On the top of this paper print the word “ GOD,” and at the bottom the word “ SIN.” Fold the “ L” and “ E” backwards, leav ing the word “ IF ” showing. Pull the paper down through the sleeve, until the word “ GOD” disappears. Using the word “ IF ” print “ GIFT,” the “ G” and the “ T” printed on the slip of paper. Pull the paper up until “ SIN” disap pears in the sleeve, and using the word “ IF ” complete the word “ RIFT.” ) Lesson: This is a strange-looking pa per. In the middle we see the word “ LIFE.” Near the top we find the word “ GOD,” and near the bottom the word “ SIN.” As I open the word “ LIFE,” we find an “ IF ” left. This “ IF ” reminds me of God’s promise to Solomon, “ If thou wilt walk in my statutes, and exe cute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them ; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father” (1 Kings 6:12). With God as his life, Solomon was promised a great gift. When the word “ GOD” comes down into “ LIFE ” see what happens. We see the word “ GIFT,” reminding us of God’s great gift which He promised to Solomon. Supposing “ SIN” enters “ LIFE” in stead o f God. We now see the word “ RIFT” instead of the word “ GIFT.” This word means “ To separate into parts.” When sin entered the life of Solomon his kingdom was separated. You, too, may have a “ GIFT” or a “ RIFT ” in your life, depending on whether God or sin is allowed to enter.

Object: A piece of white silk 12 inches square. (Block out an inch square in the middle and color it with black ink. Begin the lesson with the black concealed in one hand.) Lesson: I hold in my hand a piece of beautiful silk 12 inches square. It has 144 square inches in it. This beau tiful piece of silk reminds me o f king Solomon. It was said, “ And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon . . . And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt” (1 Kings 4:25,29,30).

There were many wonderful things about the kingdom of Solomon. In many ways it was the most wonderful reign of any of Israel’s kings. As I unfold this piece of silk, what is the most noticeable thing about it? “ The black square in the middle,” I hear someone say. Correct, and the life of Solomon was in a large manner spoiled by his later sin. In First Kings 11:9,11 we read, “ And the Lord was angry with Solo mon, because his heart was turned from the Lord God of Israel, which had ap peared unto him twice . . . Wherefore' the Lord said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.” The only thing about the silk that is noticeable is the black square. It is too bad, because there are 143 square inches clean and white, and only one is black ened, representing sin. Boys and girls it is this way in life— a Christian may do many wonderful services for the Lord, and then later get his life stained with some sin. When this happens, the good things are forgotten by the people who know him, and only the sin is re membered. His whole influence counts for nothing in the sight of men. Chris tians should always rely upon God’s power to save and keep them from sin which mars their testimony.
