JANUARY 2026 BARSTOW UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Page 5 AROUND THE DISTRICT
The BUSD Nutrition Service team is made up of approximately 70 classified positions throughout our district, serving 13 school sites and providing breakfast, lunch, and after school supper meals to our schools that have Champions after school programs. Over the last two and a half years, we have transitioned to building in more scratch-cooked meals and fresher products. Our goal has been to provide nutritious meals that our students like to ensure not only access to meals but meals that our students will eat. A student-favorite dish is our Mac ‘N’ Cheese that is made completely from scratch, utilizing whole-grain pasta, low sodium, low fat cheddar cheese, low fat milk, and other raw ingredients. This meal has become a staple in our menu cycle. Entrees made fully from scratch are made in our main kitchen and transported to our schools the day they are made to ensure our students are getting a freshly made meal. Our goal is to continue introducing scratch-made meals to our students as well as speed scratch recipes to enhance our meal services and reduce pre-processed and prepackaged meals.
Our department continues to work towards offering fresh produce to ensure that our students are able to have access to whole fruits & vegetables with minimal to no processing. This reduces preservatives and increases the nutritional value that our students are receiving daily. We ask that all students take at least one fruit or vegetable to complete their meal.
