A Day On, Not a Day Off: Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This month, BUSD schools will be closed on the third Monday of January to observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. A day to remember an American hero and reflect on his values. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968) was one of the most important leaders in American history. He was a minister, a father, and the powerful voice of the Civil Rights movement. His main goal was to end segregation and make sure that every American, no matter their skin color, had equal rights, opportunities, and respect.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Dr. King was a champion for change using peaceful actions, powerful words, and organized peaceful protests instead of using violence. He was inspired by his Christian faith and the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. His most famous moment came in 1963, when he delivered his incredible "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Now we get the day off of school and work because Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a Federal Holiday, recognized by the U.S. government to honor his immense impact on the country. Since 1994, Congress has designated the MLK holiday as a National Day of Service. This means it’s meant to be "a day on, not a day off." It’s an opportunity to help your community and make Dr. King’s dream of a better world a reality. The day is a crucial reminder for all students to learn about justice, equality, courage, and the importance of using your voice to stand up for what is right. Dr. King said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'” This year, let’s answer that question by participating in a small act of service. Examples would be a Kindness rock project, paint words of encouragement on rocks and leave them in your park or on the sidewalk for someone to find; Grab some gloves and a trash bag (with adult supervision) and clean up litter in a local park or community area, or discuss as a family over dinner how you can better promote kindness, fairness and inclusion every single day. By reflecting on Dr. King’s principles and participating in acts of service we strengthen our community to make a better world a reality.
