AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION SELECTION TOOLS EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

PRODUCTION EPDS Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) , expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) , expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires. Yearling Height EPD (YH) , is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC) , expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. MATERNAL EPDS Heifer Pregnancy (HP) , is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) , is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) , is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Herds (MkH) , indicate the number of herds from which daughters are reported. Daughters (MkD) , reflects the number of daughters that have progeny weaning weight records included in the analysis. Mature Weight EPD (MW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. Mature Height EPD (MH) ,expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires. Cow Energy Value ($EN) , expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. MANAGEMENT EPDS Docility (Doc) , is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized. Claw Set EPD (Claw) , is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set. The ideal claw set is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced. Foot Angle EPD (Angle) , is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth. Pulmonary arterial pressure EPD (PAP) , is expressed in millimeters of Mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny with a lower PAP score. PAP score is an indicator of susceptibility to high altitude disease commonly experienced at elevations greater than 5,500 feet. Selection for this trait aims to improve the genetic potential for a sire’s progeny to have lower PAP scores thus a lower chance of contracting high altitude disease increasing the environmental adaptability of cattle living in mountain areas. Hair Shed EPD , is expressed in units of hair shed score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny who shed their winter

coat earlier in the spring. Selection for this trait should improve the genetic potential for a sire’s progeny to shed off earlier increasing the environmental adaptability of cattle living in heat stressed areas and producers grazing endophyte-infected (hot) fescue. CARCASS EPDS Carcass Weight EPD (CW) , expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb) , expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE) , expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat) , expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Group/progeny (C Grp/ Pg and U Grp/Pg) reflects the number of contemporary groups and the number of carcass and ultrasound progeny included in the analysis. $VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes , an economic selection index allows multiple change in several different traits at once pertaining to a specific breeding objective. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. More Info Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle. Weaned Calf Value ($W) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight. Feedlot Value ($F) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning feedlot merit compared to the progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis, but with no consideration of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Traits contributing directly to the index are as follows: yearling weight (gain), carcass weight and dry-matter intake. Grid Value ($G) , an index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will market cattle on an above-industry-average carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows (in no particular order): carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area, and fat. Beef Value ($B) , a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows: yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat. Combined Value ($C) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) directly influencing a combined index: calving ease direct (CED) and maternal (CEM), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), maternal milk (Milk), heifer pregnancy (HP), docility (DOC), mature cow weight (MW), foot angle (Angle), claw set (Claw), dry matter intake (DMI), marbling (Marb), carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (RE) and fat thickness (Fat).

Predictable Genetics for Practical Cattlemen Mill Brae Ranch

Mark, Janice & Taylor Nikkel www.millbraeranch.com millbraeranch@gmail.com

15670 Cattlemen Rd Maple Hill, KS, 66507 785-256-3072

As we prepare for this year’s sale, we feel blessed to have made it through the polar vortex with just a few frozen ears. It certainly tested our will and faith but thanks to help from Taylor and J.D., we survived. Mother Nature was uncooperative, and we were unable to get the bulls pictured this year. Although our numbers this year are still smaller, we’re excited about the crop on the ground. We put in around 75 embryos and will have a much larger selection next year. We continue to be aggressive in our ET program to capitalize on the very best genetics we have. Many of the bulls in this year’s sale are full brothers out of our very best cows. 2023 was hard on our donors and we lost two, but their daughters are stepping up to take their place in our ET program. We’ve continued to take a progressively balanced approach in our sire selection giving our customers options for adding value to their programs. That’s reflected in the bulls in this year’s sale. As a set, they’ve performed well and offer breed-leading EPD profiles to enhance multiple traits for an operation. Our continued partnership with Barrett Cattle in marketing bulls provides an opportunity to choose from different sire and age groups, backed by two cowherds which have placed continued selection pressure on udder quality and mothering ability, traits for which an EPD doesn’t yet exist. We appreciate the valued relationships and friends we’ve acquired over the years. Your business is of the upmost importance to us and isn’t something we take lightly. Pairing the genomic test with the submission of unbiased data for a multitude of traits provides our customers with the most reliable EPDs available. We firmly believe in the measurement and submission of production and phenotypic traits. A genomic-enhanced EPD is only sustainable if it’s coupled with the submission of actual data. We look forward to seeing you on March 22nd! Please let us know if we can answer any questions or if you’d like to view the bulls prior to sale day.

scrotal measured, disposition and foot scored, and ultrasound measured by an AAA CUP Certified technician. Late February bulls were given a complete breeding soundness exam by Dr. Karl Lukert, St. Mary’s Veterinary Services, and vaccinated with Preg Guard 10. Breeding soundness exam papers will be provided to the buyer at the time of checkout. Bulls have tested P.I. negative. Guarantee Bulls are guaranteed to be fertile to the best of our knowledge and have undergone a complete Breeding Soundness Exam. After purchase, if they are injured anytime during the first breeding season to make them functionally infertile, we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available or issue you a credit equal to your purchase minus salvage value. That credit may be used toward the purchase of an animal offered for sale by Mill Brae Ranch. If you experience an issue with a bull purchased from us, please contact us and we will make every effort to resolve the issue. Retained Interest Mill Brae Ranch reserves the right to retain a 1/3 semen interest on their bulls in the sale unless otherwise noted. The new owner will own full possession and 100% salvage value of the bull. The semen interest is retaining the right to 1/3 of the semen sales revenue from the bull if, sometime in the future, semen sales become a possibility.

Maintaining reproductive efficiency is key to our success and our customers’ success. Enrollment in the AHIR and Maternal Plus program furthers our commitment for submitting data to augment EPD accuracy for numerous traits. For years we’ve focused on providing our customers with seedstock that are born easily, tip the scales at weaning and yearling, and offer feed efficiency and carcass merit for those feeding their cattle. Our cows are the factory which keeps us in business. They must breed in a timely manner, raise a heavy calf at weaning, maintain functional udders and sound structure or they go to town. We believe in taking a progressively balanced approach to our genetic selections. Development Bulls were weaned in late August and received no creep prior to weaning. They’ve been fed a high-roughage ration designed for 3 lbs. average daily gain. They’re maintained in a large trap requiring them to exercise multiple times a day between feed and water keeping them in peak physical condition for breeding. We practice low-stress handling on foot, on horseback, and with “Roxie” the cow dog. These bulls are gentle and easy to work with in close quarters. Health Pre-weaning the bulls were vaccinated with Bovilis Nasalgen 3-PMH and Alpha 7/MB-1. Mid-Summer they were vaccinated with Pyramid 5 + Presponse SQ, Ultrabac 7, Dectomax injectable wormer, and Clean Up II pour-on. Late August, bulls were weaned, vaccinated with Pyramid 5+Presponse and Ivermax pour-on applied. Late September the bulls were tattooed and Exhile pour- on applied. Mid-November the bulls were freeze-branded and received Dectomax pour-on. Late December bulls received Dectomax pour-on. Early February bulls received Multimin 90. At approximately 365 days of age the bulls were weighed,

Mill Brae Ranch enrolls each female in Maternal Plus, a voluntary program which tracks data on breeding, calving, and disposal. The data submitted is utilized towards the development of a functional longevity EPD. This logo is displayed on bulls meeting a minimum marbling EPD (Marb) of +0.65 and an Angus Grid Value Index ($G) of +55 or higher.

SPRING YEARLING BULLS

Mill Brae Benchmark 9016 - Sire of Lots 1-2

Mill Brae FP Joanie 3063 - 2nd generation Pathfinder dam of Benchmark

Mill Brae CP Joanie 9015 - Daughter of Joanie 3063 and full sister to Benchmark • Benchmark is a blending of maternal productivity and exceptional performance. His calves come easy and grow like crazy. His Pathfinder dam, Mill Brae FP Joanie 3063, walks with the best of the breed. We’ve calved his first daughters this spring and really appreciate their udder quality, docility, and exceptional foot quality. • Progeny are good, functional cattle and his calves are a consistent sire group in type and kind. We’ll be using him again this spring. His sons were the high-selling sire group in our 2023 sale and he sired the high-selling bull going to Randy Ardery. • The Joanie’s have been one of our most influential cow families, raising sires and dams that are working in Angus operations across the United States.

• Backed by generations of elite Mill Brae donors and Pathfinders. The dam of Lot 1 is charting the same path as the four generations of Mill Brae dams who came before her. She was the 4th cow to calve this Spring and records a calving interval of 366 days on 3 calves, a WR of 104, and a YW of 107; she’s on her way to earning Pathfinder status. • We anticipate she’ll enter our ET program this spring. Her Benchmark son sold to Stuewe Ranch in our 2023 sale.

• High-gaining bull in the pen from weaning to yearling and 2nd high-ratioing at yearling. The dam of Lot 2 is a massive, sound-structured Niagara daughter earning Pathfinder status this year. Granddam was Taylor’s last Angus show heifer taking her to the top 15 finals in showmanship at the 2016 National Jr. Angus Show. Dam is a candidate for our ET program this spring.

E&B Lady Plus 643 - $210,000 dam of Wildcat

• A highlight of the 2021 sale season, Wildcat is a feature in the Genex line-up from the Benoit program known for producing some of the most consistent, functional and fault-free Angus cattle. Semen on this now-deceased sire is extremely valuable and rare. • He excels to the top of the breed in his ability to transmit high-performance genetics for growth and curve-bending carcass traits. His dam, E&B Lady Plus 643, is backed by generations of maternal breeding and serves as a donor in the prominent Deer Valley Farm and Madeiras Farm in Tennessee. • Wildcat sired standouts in this set of bulls and in our replacement heifer pen as well. He offers a lot of usefulness and versatility with top percent $Values across the board and a pedigree rich in maternal heritage.

Mill Brae PW Blackcap 7193 - Donor dam of Lots 4, 8, 9, 12, 13 & 15. Her sons averaged $7,000 in our 2023 sale and are working for Joe & Anita Miller and Stuewe Ranch.

Mill Brae Benchmark 2049 - Maternal brother to Lot 4 selling to Joe & Anita Miller in our 2023 sale.

• This bull makes a statement and is as impressive in person as he is on paper. He’s inherited his dam’s massive stature and steps down on sound feet and legs. • An atypical heifer bull with extra muscling and dimension that offers breed-leading growth, carcass merit and $Values across the board. He gained 3.48 lbs on test ratioing 108 and ultrasound scanned at .27 for fat. He’s pure muscle with all the extra bells and whistles. • With generations of proven and potent Mill Brae females in his pedigree, his daughters will be keepers and he’ll sire scale-crushing, money-making progeny. • His dam just calved a Trademark heifer that should make an exceptional replacement.
